Participating in IPMUN was an opportunity to explore international affairs, understand different perspectives, and develop skills that extend beyond the classroom. Model United Nations encourages students to consider global challenges, discuss possible solutions, and understand how countries with different priorities can work together. Through this experience, I was able to reflect on my personal growth, the importance of preparation, and the responsibilities involved in making decisions that affect others.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
IPMUN helped me recognise the importance of communication, research, and critical thinking. Understanding international issues and considering different perspectives encouraged me to analyse information rather than accept ideas at face value. At the same time, the experience made me realise that there is always room for improvement, particularly in developing confidence when expressing opinions and responding to viewpoints that differ from my own. Reflecting on these strengths and weaknesses helped me understand the importance of continuous self-improvement.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the challenges of participating in MUN is understanding complex international issues and developing well-supported arguments. These topics often involve political, economic, and social factors that cannot be understood from a single perspective. Engaging with these issues encouraged me to strengthen my research and analytical skills while improving my ability to organise information and communicate ideas clearly. It also challenged me to think critically about possible solutions rather than viewing international problems as having simple answers.
LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Preparation is an important part of any MUN experience. Understanding the relevant issues, researching different perspectives, and preparing arguments require organisation and a clear approach. IPMUN helped me appreciate the value of planning ahead and breaking a larger task into manageable steps. By approaching preparation systematically, I could develop a better understanding of the topics and make more effective use of my time. This reinforced the importance of taking responsibility for my own learning and preparation.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
Engaging with unfamiliar topics and complex international debates requires patience and sustained effort. There can be a considerable amount of information to understand before forming a clear and informed opinion. IPMUN encouraged me to remain committed to learning about the issues and developing my arguments, even when the topics were challenging. This experience helped me recognise that progress often comes through consistent effort and a willingness to work through difficulties rather than expecting immediate results.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration is central to Model United Nations because international challenges rarely have solutions that can be developed by one person or country alone. Delegates need to listen to different viewpoints, communicate their ideas, and consider possible compromises. IPMUN helped me appreciate how cooperation can bring together different perspectives and contribute to more balanced solutions. It also highlighted that effective collaboration does not require everyone to agree initially instead, it requires respect, constructive discussion, and a willingness to work towards a shared objective.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
IPMUN provided an opportunity to engage with international affairs and consider challenges that affect countries and communities around the world. It helped me understand that global issues are often interconnected and that decisions made by one country can have consequences beyond its borders. I also became more aware of how countries may approach the same issue differently because of their circumstances, priorities, and resources. This reinforced the importance of international cooperation and encouraged me to look beyond my immediate surroundings when considering problems and their possible solutions.
LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Another important aspect of MUN is considering the ethical implications of international decisions. Policies that benefit one group may create difficulties for another, making it necessary to consider fairness, responsibility, and the wider consequences of proposed solutions. IPMUN encouraged me to think about the people affected by political decisions and recognise that effective solutions should consider more than individual interests. It helped me appreciate the importance of evaluating different perspectives and considering the potential consequences of decisions before supporting a particular course of action.
Overall, IPMUN was a valuable learning experience that helped me reflect on my strengths, recognise areas for growth, and appreciate the importance of preparation and perseverance. It strengthened my understanding of collaboration and encouraged me to engage more thoughtfully with international issues. Most importantly, the experience reminded me that addressing global challenges requires informed discussion, respect for different perspectives, and responsible decision-making. The skills and insights I gained through IPMUN are valuable not only in academic settings but also in my development as a more thoughtful and responsible individual.
