Bal Mela (Service)

LO1 – Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Taking part in Bal Mela helped me learn more about myself. I have always enjoyed arts and crafts, and this experience showed me that I am patient and enjoy working with children. Teaching them how to make flowers using pipe cleaners came naturally, and I loved seeing their excitement. At the same time, I realized that I need to become more confident while managing a large group of children. This experience encouraged me to improve my communication and leadership skills.

LO2 – Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills

Not every child understood the activity in the same way. Some quickly followed the steps, while others needed extra help and encouragement. At first, I found it difficult to keep everyone engaged, but I learned to explain the instructions more simply and demonstrate each step patiently. Watching the children slowly gain confidence taught me that every learner is different. This experience improved my communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills.

LO5 – Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

This activity would not have been as successful without teamwork. My classmates and I worked together to prepare materials, guide the children, and make sure everyone was involved. Whenever one of us noticed a child struggling, another teammate stepped in to help. Supporting each other made the session run smoothly and created a welcoming atmosphere. It reminded me that working together not only makes tasks easier but also creates a bigger and more meaningful impact.

LO6 – Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Bal Mela helped me understand the importance of Quality Education (SDG 4) beyond textbooks and classrooms. Many of the children had very few opportunities to explore creative activities or use craft materials. Through this simple art session, I hoped to give them a chance to express themselves, learn something new, and enjoy creating something with their own hands. It made me realize that even small acts of service can help make education more joyful, inclusive, and meaningful.

Overall Reflection

Looking back, Bal Mela was much more than just an arts and crafts activity. The best part was seeing the children’s faces light up when they finished making their flowers and proudly showed them to their friends and teachers. Their happiness made all the preparation and effort worthwhile. I left the event with a sense of satisfaction, knowing that I had made someone’s day a little brighter. This experience reminded me that kindness, creativity, and a little bit of time can leave a lasting impact on others while helping us grow as individuals.
