Cross-Country Run

As part of my CAS activity, I undertook a cross-country running challenge in which I successfully completed two consecutive marathons (19th August, 21st August, and 28th November). This experience allowed me to push my physical and mental limits while significantly improving my stamina and endurance. Since this was a new and unfamiliar challenge, it helped me build resilience, perseverance, and a deeper appreciation for physical fitness. The activity clearly aligns with the CAS strand of ‘Activity’ and also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-being, as it encourages physical fitness, mental strength, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Through this experience, I understood that maintaining good health is not only an individual responsibility but also something that benefits the wider community. This was reflected in the shared participation and motivation among my peers and myself during the marathon.

LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth.
Taking part in the cross-country marathon was both physically and mentally demanding, encouraging me to reflect on my strengths as well as areas for improvement (LO1). I have always been interested in fitness, as I am an active gymnast and an advanced yoga trainee, but this experience challenged my endurance in a completely new way. It involved fast-paced physical exertion, which I was not used to. Through this experience, I realized that although I am determined, I need to improve my consistency and learn how to pace myself more effectively during long-distance runs. This reflection helped me identify an important area for personal growth.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Taking on this challenge pushed me beyond my comfort zone and required me to commit to something that initially felt intimidating (LO2). Although I had participated in two marathons in the past, the cross-country run felt like a new experience. While I was familiar with shorter distances, completing a 5 km run demanded greater resilience and physical strength, which I found challenging. In the beginning, I doubted my ability to finish. Competing alongside more experienced runners felt overwhelming, but I reminded myself that the true goal was to complete the run rather than compete. By participating, I proved to myself that I can handle situations that seem difficult at first. This experience boosted my confidence and encouraged me to take on new challenges in the future, whether in academics, sports, or service.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

One of the most important lessons I gained from this experience was the value of perseverance (LO4). The run was physically demanding and exhausting, especially the 5 km distance, and there were moments when I felt like slowing down or even stopping. However, I pushed past those thoughts by focusing on my breathing, maintaining my rhythm, and reminding myself that each step brought me closer to completing the run and achieving my goal. The discipline I built during my training played a crucial role in helping me stay committed throughout the event. This experience taught me that perseverance is essential not only in running but also in other areas of life, such as academics, future goals, and physical challenges. It made me realize that resilience is often the key to achieving success.
