CAS Strand: Activity
This year, I participated in cross country running as part of my CAS Activity experience. What initially seemed like just a sport became one of the most demanding and transformative experiences of my Grade 11 year. Cross country challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally, pushing me beyond my comfort zone and helping me develop resilience, discipline, and teamwork skills.
At the beginning of the season, I underestimated how physically demanding long-distance running on uneven terrain would be. The uphill segments were especially challenging, and I struggled with stamina during the first few weeks. However, through consistent training, I began to notice improvements in my endurance and pacing. This experience helped me identify my strengths and areas for growth (LO1). I realized that while I had determination, I needed to improve my breathing technique and time management to balance academics with training.
Over time, I worked on developing better pacing strategies and recovery habits. Training multiple times a week required commitment and organization, particularly alongside IB coursework. Managing homework, assessments, and practice sessions forced me to improve my planning skills. Through this process, I demonstrated that I had undertaken challenges and developed new skills (LO2), including physical endurance, mental focus, and stronger self-discipline.
Cross country is often seen as an individual sport, but team spirit plays a crucial role. During practices and competitions, teammates motivated each other and shared advice on technique and race strategies. Supporting others during difficult runs strengthened my sense of collaboration. This experience allowed me to demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively (LO5). I learned that collective encouragement significantly improves performance and morale.
Participating in races also taught me perseverance. There were moments during competitions when I felt physically exhausted and considered slowing down significantly. However, I pushed myself to continue, reminding myself of the training I had completed. This experience showed commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences (LO4). Finishing each race, regardless of placement, gave me a sense of accomplishment and personal growth.
Additionally, I became more aware of the importance of maintaining physical health and wellbeing. Training consistently required proper nutrition, hydration, and rest. Through this process, I developed a greater understanding of how lifestyle choices impact performance and overall health. This reflects engagement with issues of global importance related to health and wellbeing (LO6), as physical activity and healthy habits are essential for long-term health.
Although cross country is not directly a leadership project, I took initiative during training sessions by encouraging teammates who were struggling and helping maintain team motivation. In doing so, I contributed positively to the team environment and demonstrated responsibility within the group dynamic.
Overall, cross country running has been one of the most meaningful CAS experiences of my IB journey so far. It strengthened my resilience, improved my time management, and taught me the value of persistence and teamwork. Most importantly, it showed me that growth often happens outside of comfort zones. The discipline and determination I developed through this activity will support me not only in sports but also in academic and personal challenges throughout the IB programme.
