Plantation Drive – Activity

My CAS experience involved participating in a plantation drive organised by the school. The drive was conducted on different dates across the academic year, where I actively took part in three plantation drives and. Through this experience, I not only learned the practical process of planting and maintaining saplings but also developed a deeper understanding of nature. Being directly involved helped me understand the importance of environmental conservation and the role even small actions play in protecting our surroundings.

LO 2: Demonstrating that Challenges Were Undertaken and New Skills Developed

One of the main challenges during the plantation drive was the physical effort involved in digging soil and planting saplings properly. Working outdoors under the sun required energy and patience, especially when the soil was hard and uneven. Initially, I underestimated how much effort it would take to plant each sapling correctly. Through this experience, I developed practical skills such as proper planting techniques, understanding soil depth requirements and ensuring saplings were stable enough to grow. I also planted a variety of saplings, each labeled with identification markers indicating their species, and I collected these markers as a way to remember the different types of plants I contributed to planting. This activity helped me step outside my comfort zone and build both physical endurance and environmental awareness.

LO 6: Demonstrating Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

Tree plantation directly connects to global issues such as climate change, deforestation, and loss of biodiversity. While planting the saplings, I reflected on how increasing green cover contributes to carbon absorption and improved air quality. I understood that although planting a few trees may seem small, collective efforts can contribute to combating environmental degradation. This experience helped me recognize the connection between local action and global impact. It made me more conscious of sustainability practices and encouraged me to think about how everyday actions influence larger environmental challenges.

LO 7: Recognising and Considering the Ethics of Choices and Actions

During the plantation drive, we were guided on planting suitable species and ensuring that the saplings were handled carefully. This made me reflect on the ethical responsibility we have toward nature. It is not enough to plant trees symbolically; they must be planted responsibly and maintained properly to ensure survival. I realised that environmental service requires thoughtful decision-making, such as selecting appropriate locations and species as per the climate and surroundings, rather than acting without long-term planning. This experience strengthened my sense of accountability and made me more mindful about sustainable and ethical environmental practices.
