Participating in the school’s University Fair as the Event Coordinator for the guides and ushers team was a meaningful service experience for me. My main responsibility was to coordinate students who guided university representatives and visitors around the campus, helped manage directions, and ensured that the event ran smoothly. Through this experience, I was able to demonstrate and develop several CAS learning outcomes.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During this event, I discovered that one of my strengths is organization and communication. I was able to clearly assign roles to the guides and ushers and make sure everyone understood their responsibilities. However, I also realized that I sometimes felt nervous when giving instructions to a large group of students. This showed me that I need to develop more confidence in leadership situations. By the end of the event, I felt more comfortable speaking and coordinating with others.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Coordinating a team during a large event was a new challenge for me. There were moments when guides were unsure about locations or when visitors asked unexpected questions. I had to quickly find solutions and ensure that everyone stayed calm and organized. Through this challenge, I developed skills such as problem-solving, quick decision-making, and better communication.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
As the event coordinator, I helped plan how the guides and ushers would operate during the fair. I worked on creating a simple system where each guide was assigned specific areas and responsibilities. I also made sure that everyone knew the schedule and key locations for university representatives. Planning these details helped the event run more efficiently.
LO4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Preparing for the university fair required dedication before and during the event. I spent time coordinating with the team, ensuring everyone was present and ready. Even when small issues occurred, such as confusion about directions or timing, I stayed committed to solving them and ensuring that the fair continued smoothly.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This experience strongly highlighted the importance of teamwork. The event could only run successfully if the guides and ushers worked together. By communicating regularly with the team and helping each other when problems arose, we were able to manage the event effectively. I realized that collaboration allows tasks to be completed faster and more efficiently.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The university fair connected students with institutions from different parts of the world, helping them explore global education opportunities. Being part of the event made me understand how important access to higher education and international exposure is for students. Supporting this event allowed me to contribute to an initiative that encourages global learning and future opportunities.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
While coordinating the event, it was important to treat all visitors and representatives respectfully and fairly. I ensured that every university representative received proper guidance and assistance from the team. This experience reminded me that being responsible in leadership roles also means acting ethically and respectfully toward everyone involved.
Conclusion
Overall, being the Event Coordinator for guides and ushers during the university fair was a valuable CAS service experience. It helped me improve my leadership, teamwork, and planning skills while also making me more confident in handling responsibilities. I learned that even small roles in organizing events can make a big difference in creating a successful experience for others.
