As part of my CAS journey, I volunteered in organising my school’s Fresher’s part with the objective of creating a welcoming and memorable experience for the incoming students. My involvement extended beyond simply attending the event, I actively contributed by designing and setting up the decorations and performing a dance with my peers during the celebration. Through these experiences, i explored different forms of creativity while developing skills in collaboration, planning, communication and performance.
I volunteered for the decor and dance. During the decoration process, my team and I made decorative pieces for the event that would make the new students feel welcomed into the school community. Alongside this, I also participated in a group dance performance. Learning the choreography, attending rehearsals, synchronizing with my teammates, and performing confidently before before a large audience required commitment and consistent effort.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths & Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I identified several of my strengths, particularly my ability to collaborate effectively, adapt to changing situations, and contribute creative ideas during the decoration process. However, I also recognized an area for improvement: confidence while performing in front of a large audience. Although I was comfortable during rehearsals, performing on stage initially made me nervous. By continuing to practice and trusting my preparation, I gradually became more confident. This experience helped me realise that confidence develops through repeated exposure and perseverance rather than being something people naturally possess.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate Challenges That Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process
One of the biggest challenges was balancing event preparations alongside my academic workload. Between attending rehearsals, helping with decorations, and completing school assignments, managing my time became increasingly important. Another challenge was ensuring that our dance performance remained synchronized despite different learning speeds among team members. We overcame these challenges by practicing consistently, communicating openly, and supporting one another whenever someone needed extra help. Throughout this process, I developed stronger time management, stage confidence, teamwork, and event preparation skills. I also learned that successful performances depend just as much on preparation behind the scenes as they do on the final presentation.
Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment & Perseverance in CAS Experiences
Preparing for the Freshers’ Party required consistent commitment over several days. There were moments when rehearsals became physically exhausting and balancing them with academic responsibilities felt overwhelming. We had to meet out of school for several days as well. However, remaining committed throughout the preparation process allowed our team to deliver a successful performance and create an enjoyable atmosphere for the freshers.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the Skills & Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Collaboration was central to every aspect of this experience. The dance performance relied entirely on teamwork, as synchronization and coordination could only be achieved through effective communication and mutual trust. Every member’s contribution was equally important, and we constantly encouraged each other throughout rehearsals. This experience reinforced my understanding that successful outcomes are built through cooperation, respect, and shared responsibility rather than individual effort alone.
Link to Theory of Knowledge
This experience highlighted how creativity is not simply an individual ability but a form of shared knowledge that develops through collaboration and communication. Throughout the planning, decorating, and rehearsing process, ideas continuously evolved as different perspectives were combined. It demonstrated that knowledge can be constructed collectively rather than individually, with each person’s experiences contributing to a stronger final outcome.
Preparing for the performance also challenged me to think about how emotion, confidence, and personal experience influence what we know about ourselves. Initially, I believed I lacked confidence on stage, but the experience showed me that confidence is developed through preparation, practice, and experience rather than being an innate quality. This reflection reinforced the Theory of Knowledge idea that our understanding of ourselves and the world is constantly shaped and reshaped through experience and reflection.
Final Takeaway

Volunteering for the Freshers’ Party allowed me to express creativity in multiple ways while contributing positively to my school community. Through decorations, I learned how thoughtful planning and visual design can create a welcoming environment, while performing on stage taught me confidence, discipline, and the value of consistent practice. Beyond developing practical skills, the experience strengthened my appreciation for teamwork and showed me how collective effort creates memorable experiences for others.
This activity also helped me develop several IB Learner Profile attributes, particularly being a Communicator, Risk-taker, Collaborative, Reflective, and Balanced learner. Working with my peers required effective communication and cooperation, while performing before a large audience encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the experience has helped me recognize both my strengths and areas where I continue to grow.
The experience benefited the wider school community by helping create a welcoming atmosphere for the incoming students, making them feel comfortable and excited to begin their journey at the school. Seeing the freshers enjoying the decorations, participating enthusiastically, and appreciating the performances made all our hard work worthwhile.
