Anand Utsav (Project)

Introduction

Welcome to my final CAS Project reflection blog! For my collaborative project, my team and I wanted to give back to the individuals who keep our school running every single day: our incredible teaching and support staff. Recognizing the high-stress environment of education and the burnout that staff members often face, we designed and executed Anand Utsav (The Festival of Joy). This was a dedicated wellness event split into two distinct zones: a DIY Creative Station for artistic relaxation and a Sports Arena for physical recreation and team bonding. Taking this project from an abstract concept to a completed, successful event was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my IB journey. Below is a detailed breakdown of how this project helped me achieve all seven CAS Learning Outcomes and contribute to global sustainability.

LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth

Before starting Anand Utsav, I had to look honestly at my own capabilities. I knew that my core strengths lay in conceptualizing big ideas, public speaking, and motivating my peers. However, my major area for growth was micro-management and handling detailed, dry logistics. Organizing an event for adults forced me to confront this weakness head-on. I had to learn how to meticulously track spreadsheets, inventory DIY crafting supplies, and plan exact schedules down to the minute. Balancing my natural enthusiasm with a newfound discipline for administrative details allowed me to grow into a much more rounded organizer.

LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills

Executing an event of this scale meant undertaking a massive challenge completely outside my comfort zone. Managing adult participants—especially our own teachers who are usually the authority figures—required a completely new set of professional communication skills. We also faced immediate logistical hurdles, such as sudden venue changes due to weather and tight scheduling conflicts within the school day. Overcoming these challenges forced me to develop critical problem-solving and event-management skills, teaching me how to think on my feet and adapt a complex plan under pressure.

LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience

This entire project was initiated and designed from scratch by our student committee. Fulfilling the planning stage meant moving far beyond a simple ideas phase. I took charge of drafting the formal project proposal, pitching the concept to the school administration for approval, and mapping out a strict timeline over several weeks. I had to coordinate with school maintenance for space allocation, manage a small budget for DIY materials, and design promotional flyers to invite the staff. Initiating this experience taught me exactly what it takes to build a project from the ground up.

LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience

A successful CAS project requires sustained effort, and there were several moments where our perseverance was tested. Balancing the intense workload of the IB Diploma alongside late-night planning meetings and sorting through sports equipment after school was exhausting. When initial staff sign-ups were low, we didn’t give up; we committed to changing our marketing strategy and personally visiting classrooms to invite teachers. Showing up every day with the same energy, from the initial brainstorming weeks to cleaning up the campus post-event, proved my long-term dedication to the project’s success.

LO5: Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively

Anand Utsav would have been impossible to pull off alone, and it truly highlighted the immense benefits of teamwork. We divided our student committee into specialized roles based on individual strengths: some handled the sports brackets and safety refereeing, while others managed the DIY craft tables. We held regular status updates to troubleshoot issues collectively. Working collaboratively taught me how to delegate tasks effectively, trust my teammates with critical responsibilities, and realize that our combined brainstorming yielded much more creative solutions than working in isolation.

LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance

While Anand Utsav was a local event, it directly engaged with an issue of global significance: workplace mental health and occupational burnout. Globally, the teaching profession faces a massive crisis of stress and low retention rates, issues often ignored in fast-paced modern work environments. By creating a dedicated “Festival of Joy” on a local scale, we actively participated in the global conversation surrounding human well-being. The experience showed me that large-scale global issues can be meaningfully addressed through targeted, empathetic actions within our immediate communities.

LO7: Recognise and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions

Ethical decision-making was embedded in every phase of our project. First, we had to ensure total inclusivity, making an ethical choice to design sports games that were accessible and safe for staff members of all ages and physical fitness levels so no one felt excluded. Second, we carefully considered our environmental impact. We consciously chose to source eco-friendly, recyclable, and sustainable materials for our DIY craft station to minimize the waste generated by the festival. This taught me that as leaders, our logistical choices must always align with ethical responsibilities toward people and the planet.

UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being

The ultimate driving force behind Anand Utsav was its alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. The core purpose of the festival was to provide a healthy physical and psychological outlet for our school’s hard-working staff. By engaging them in the therapeutic, mindful process of DIY crafting and the endorphin-boosting environment of recreational sports, we created a tangible positive shift in their immediate well-being. Seeing the teachers and support staff laughing, playing, and relaxing together was proof that our project successfully fostered a supportive, health-conscious, and joyful community environment.
