As part of Bal Mela 2025–26, I volunteered for the Social Media team and also participated in the dance performances for the children. Bal Mela is an annual event at Fountainhead School organized for children from underprivileged backgrounds, where they are invited to spend a day full of games, workshops, and fun activities. The event took place on Saturday, 7th February 2026 from 7:45 am to 1:00 pm. The purpose of the event was not just to entertain the children but also to create meaningful interaction between students and the kids so that we could build genuine connections and spread happiness through simple experiences.
As a member of the Social Media team, my role was to document and share the spirit of the event through photos, videos, and updates. This meant capturing moments that reflected the excitement of the children, the energy of the activities, and the overall atmosphere of Bal Mela. Alongside this responsibility, I also participated in a dance performance that was organized to entertain the children and make the event more lively and engaging. Being involved in both areas allowed me to contribute creatively while also actively interacting with the children.
LO1: Identify own strengths and areas for growth
Through this experience, I was able to identify some of my strengths, especially in creativity and communication. Working in the Social Media team allowed me to think about how moments could be captured and presented in a way that truly reflected the emotions of the event. Performing the dance also helped me realize that I am comfortable expressing myself in front of an audience and contributing to the energy of an event. However, I also realized that I need to work on managing multiple responsibilities at the same time, especially when I had to balance documenting the event and preparing for the dance performance.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One challenge was ensuring that important moments were captured while the event was constantly moving. Children were running between activities and things were happening quickly, so I had to stay alert and react fast. At the same time, performing the dance required coordination, practice, and confidence. Through this experience, I developed better time management, improved my ability to observe moments quickly, and gained more confidence in performing in front of a crowd.
LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Although Bal Mela was already organized by the school, as a volunteer I still had to take initiative within my role. In the Social Media team, this meant actively looking for moments worth capturing rather than waiting for instructions. I had to think about what kind of content would best represent the event. Preparing for the dance also required planning during rehearsals so that the performance would run smoothly and keep the children entertained.
LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
The event started early in the morning and required constant involvement until it ended. Even though the day was busy and sometimes tiring, I remained committed to my responsibilities. I continued documenting activities, interacting with other volunteers, and making sure I was fully prepared for the dance performance. Staying engaged throughout the event showed me the importance of commitment when participating in community service.
LO5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Both the Social Media team and the dance performance required strong teamwork. In the Social Media team, we coordinated to ensure that different activities were covered so that no important moments were missed. During the dance performance, coordination with other dancers was essential so that the performance looked synchronized and energetic. This experience reminded me that collaboration and communication are key when working in a group setting.
LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance
Bal Mela also made me reflect on the broader issue of social inequality and how many children do not always have access to opportunities for play and creative experiences. Spending time with these children helped me understand how important it is to create inclusive spaces where everyone can feel welcomed and valued. Even something as simple as a dance performance or a fun activity can bring genuine joy and connection.
Overall Reflection
Overall, Bal Mela 2025–26 was a very meaningful experience for me. Being part of the Social Media team allowed me to contribute creatively by documenting the event, while performing the dance gave me the opportunity to directly bring energy and excitement to the children. The experience helped me grow in confidence, teamwork, and responsibility. Most importantly, it reminded me that small efforts can have a big impact, and that sometimes the simplest moments are the ones that create the biggest smiles.
