Basketball (HDP)
For my CAS Activity strand, I opted for Basketball via school’s Holistic Development Program (HDP). I’ll be honest: when I started, I couldn’t even dribble without looking at the ball. I was a complete novice entering a world of seasoned players. However, what started as a simple attempt to stay fit turned into a deep-seated passion. This program wasn’t just about learning the rules of a fascinating sport, it was an emotional rollercoaster where we celebrated hard-earned victories together and learned to mourn our losses with dignity.
Learning Outcomes Catered
LO1 – Knowing strengths and areas to improve: I discovered that I have good physical endurance and can keep up the pace during long matches. However, I realized that my technical ball-handling skills were a major area for improvement, as I often lost control of the ball under pressure from defenders.
LO2 – Facing challenges and learning new skills: As a complete beginner, every session was a challenge. I had to learn the fundamental skills of shooting form, defensive footwork, and the triple-threat position. Staying calm after making mistakes in front of experienced players was a mental challenge I eventually overcame.
LO3 – Planning and taking initiative: I took the initiative to set up a personal training schedule outside of the HDP hours. I planned specific drills to improve my free-throw percentage, realizing that extra practice was the only way to catch up with the rest of the team.
LO4 – Commitment and perseverance: Throughout the journey, we celebrated many victories but also mourned many losses. Perseverance meant showing up to the court the very next day after a tough defeat with the same passion and drive to improve my game.
LO5 – Working with others: Basketball taught me that a team cannot function without trust. I had to learn how to communicate effectively on the court, calling for passes and directing defense, which showed me that individual talent is useless without strong team collaboration.
LO6 – Global importance: Sports are a global tool for promoting Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3). This experience showed me how physical activity acts as a universal language that builds community and combats the global rise of sedentary lifestyles and related health issues.
LO7 – Making ethical choices: I had to make ethical choices regarding sportsmanship and fair play. Even when the game was intense or a referee made a call I disagreed with, I chose to remain principled and respectful, prioritizing the integrity of the sport over winning at all costs.
Final Takeaway
The most important thing I learned is that it is never too late to be a beginner. Basketball has taught me “grit”—the resilience to keep shooting even after missing ten times. This HDP program gave me the exposure I needed to build my skills and find a community of friends who pushed me to be better. I’ve developed a genuine passion for this sport with all my heart, and I now realize that victories are sweet, but the growth you find in a loss is what actually makes you a player. I’m walking away from this program fitter, more disciplined, and officially a basketball fan for life.
