As part of my CAS Creativity experience, I participated in the BM Spark Tank, where my team developed a business idea called Eco Leaf. Our concept focused on a microgeneration system that uses leaf-shaped wind turbines to generate renewable energy in urban areas.
Eco Leaf was designed to address the growing need for sustainable energy solutions in cities, where space and efficiency are major challenges. Unlike traditional wind turbines, our idea was to create a system that works effectively in low-wind conditions and can be installed in everyday spaces such as balconies, gardens, and residential areas. We also aimed to make the product visually appealing so that it blends into the environment rather than standing out as industrial equipment.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this experience, I recognized that one of my strengths is contributing meaningful ideas during group discussions. I was able to understand the concept of our product and help develop how it would function and solve a real-world problem. I also showed strength in organizing ideas and helping structure our overall concept clearly.
At the same time, I identified an area for growth in my communication skills. I realized that I need to become more confident and expressive when sharing ideas, especially in situations that require clarity and quick thinking. This experience helped me understand that strong communication is just as important as having a good idea.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Developing Eco Leaf involved several challenges, particularly in balancing creativity with practicality. It was not enough to simply think of an innovative idea; we had to ensure that it could realistically work in real-life conditions.
This required us to think critically about factors such as energy generation, efficiency, and usability. Through this process, I developed skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, and applying theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. I also improved my ability to adapt ideas based on limitations and constraints.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
During the development process, we received feedback that encouraged us to improve the clarity and effectiveness of our idea. As a team, we took this seriously and worked on refining our slides, simplifying explanations, and improving the structure of our work.
This required persistence, as we had to revisit and improve our work multiple times. It showed me that success is not achieved in the first attempt, but through continuous effort and improvement. I learned that being open to feedback and putting in consistent effort leads to better outcomes.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Teamwork was an essential part of creating Eco Leaf. Each member brought different perspectives and ideas, which helped us develop a more well-rounded and effective concept. By sharing responsibilities and supporting each other, we were able to improve both the idea and the overall quality of our work.
This experience taught me that collaboration leads to stronger results because it combines different strengths and viewpoints. It also helped me understand the importance of listening, respecting others’ ideas, and working together towards a common goal.
Reflection
The BM Spark Tank experience showed me that innovation requires more than creativity—it requires critical thinking, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Through working on Eco Leaf, I gained a deeper understanding of how sustainable solutions can be developed to solve real-world problems.
This experience also helped me grow personally by improving my ability to think creatively, work collaboratively, and reflect on my own strengths and weaknesses. It made me realize that meaningful ideas come from effort, persistence, and the willingness to improve.
Overall, this experience has encouraged me to become more confident in sharing my ideas and to continue exploring innovative solutions that can have a positive impact on the environment.
