CAS trip: MOKHAMAL

As part of my CAS journey, I participated in a six-day rural immersion trip to Mokhamal in Dang, Gujarat. This experience allowed me to step outside my urban lifestyle and engage directly with a rural community. Through activities such as interacting with villagers, assisting in a government school, trekking, and participating in group projects, I gained a deeper understanding of rural life and its challenges.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

During this experience, I recognised adaptability as one of my key strengths. I was able to adjust to early mornings, simple living conditions, and a completely different routine. However, I also identified areas for growth. Initially, I struggled with the lack of facilities and experienced dehydration, which affected my health. This made me realise the importance of being more aware of my physical needs and maintaining my well-being in unfamiliar environments.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

I faced several challenges throughout the trip, particularly physical fatigue during trekking and adjusting to a new lifestyle. Climbing uphill after long walks was especially difficult. By observing locals and learning to control my breathing and pace, I gradually improved my stamina. I also developed new practical skills through activities like bamboo weaving and working on construction tasks, which required patience and coordination.

LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Although the trip was organised by the school, I showed initiative by actively participating in all activities and taking responsibility where needed. For example, while contributing to the donation of school supplies, I helped plan how the funds should be distributed effectively among books, stationery, and other essentials. This required quick decision-making and planning to ensure the resources were used meaningfully.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

The experience required continuous effort and commitment, both physically and mentally. Activities such as trekking, waking up early, and completing hands-on tasks like bamboo basket making tested my perseverance. Even when tasks were difficult or tiring, I pushed myself to continue and complete them, which helped build resilience and determination.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively

Collaboration played a major role throughout the trip. Whether it was building fences, painting Warli art, or completing group tasks, teamwork was essential. We divided roles, communicated effectively, and supported each other to complete tasks efficiently. This helped me improve my cooperation, communication, and teamwork skills, and showed me how collective effort leads to better outcomes.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The trip exposed me to real-world issues such as inequality in access to education, healthcare, sanitation, and employment. Visiting the government school and interacting with the local community made these challenges more tangible. I realised that these are not just local issues but global concerns, connected to broader themes of poverty and unequal resource distribution.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

This experience made me reflect on my own lifestyle and choices. Seeing how limited resources are used carefully in rural communities made me more aware of overconsumption in my daily life. I also considered the importance of respectful engagement, ensuring that my interactions with the villagers were genuine and not superficial. This helped me understand the ethical responsibility involved in community-based experiences.

SDG Connection

This experience connects to several Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Decent Work and Economic Growth. Observing these issues firsthand helped me understand how interconnected they are and reinforced the importance of working towards sustainable and equitable development.
