Introduction
The Christmas Carnival was a rewarding CAS experience where I volunteered at a government school to organize games for the students. Children participated in different activities and earned tokens when they won, which they could later exchange for prizes. My role involved managing one of the game stations, explaining the rules, encouraging participation, and ensuring that the children understood how the token and reward system worked. This experience allowed me to interact with students from a different background while developing my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. It also helped me understand the importance of community service and how small efforts can create a positive impact.
CAS Learning Outcomes
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During the Christmas Carnival, I discovered both my strengths and the areas where I need further improvement. One of my strengths was communicating and interacting with young children. I found it easy to encourage them, make them feel comfortable, and keep them engaged in the games. However, I realized that explaining the rules of the game and the token-prize exchange system was much more difficult than I expected. Some children misunderstood the process, and I had to explain it multiple times in different ways. This experience made me realize that although I communicate well in casual conversations, I need to improve my ability to give clear and simple instructions, especially when working with younger children. By the end of the event, I became more patient and adapted my explanations so that they were easier to understand.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One of the biggest challenges during the carnival was the language barrier. Many of the children were more comfortable speaking Gujarati, while my Gujarati speaking skills are limited. Since verbal communication was not always effective, I relied on hand gestures, demonstrations, and facial expressions to explain the games and the reward system. Initially, this was challenging because I was unsure whether the children fully understood me. As the event continued, I became more confident in using non-verbal communication and learned that effective communication is not limited to spoken language. This experience strengthened my adaptability, problem-solving skills, and confidence in communicating with people despite language differences.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Throughout the event, I worked closely with a partner to manage our game station. We divided responsibilities, with one of us explaining the game while the other organized the tokens, prizes, and students waiting to participate. This made the activity much more organized and efficient than if either of us had worked alone. We also supported each other whenever one of us faced difficulties, allowing us to manage the large number of participants without becoming overwhelmed. This experience showed me that teamwork is not simply about sharing work but also about supporting one another, communicating effectively, and combining different strengths to achieve a common goal. Working collaboratively made the experience more enjoyable and helped both of us develop new skills.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Volunteering at the government school made me reflect on the importance of financial awareness and education. While interacting with the children, I realized that many students have limited opportunities to learn practical life skills such as managing money wisely and making thoughtful spending decisions. Although the token system was designed as part of a fun carnival, it also introduced the idea of earning rewards and deciding how to use them. Watching the children choose between different prizes reminded me that financial decision-making is an important life skill that is not always taught equally to everyone. This experience made me reflect on the broader issue of financial literacy and how providing opportunities to develop such skills can help individuals make informed decisions throughout their lives.
Reflection
Overall, the Christmas Carnival was an enjoyable and meaningful CAS experience. It allowed me to contribute to the local community while developing important skills such as communication, adaptability, and teamwork. I learned to overcome language barriers, recognized areas where I can improve, and gained a greater appreciation for working collaboratively. The experience also encouraged me to think about the importance of practical life skills, such as financial literacy, and how community activities can promote learning in engaging ways. It was a valuable experience that strengthened both my personal growth and my understanding of service.
