As part of my CAS Service component, I volunteered at the Children’s Christmas Literacy Carnival organised by the Interact Club in collaboration with Rotary Downtown. The event was held at Agrasen School and hosted around 700 students from government schools. I assisted at a game stall designed to promote literacy and learning through fun, interactive activities. My role involved guiding children, ensuring fair play, and distributing tokens that could be exchanged for rewards such as stationery and water bottles.
Learning outcomes covered:-
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
This experience helped me recognise my strengths in communication and empathy while also improving my confidence in managing large groups of children.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills:
Handling a high number of students, managing time efficiently, and operating the token reward system helped me develop organisational and leadership skills.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
While the event was planned by the Interact Club, I actively supported the execution of the stall and took responsibility for ensuring smooth participation.
LO4 – Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences:
I remained engaged throughout both sessions of the carnival, maintaining energy and focus despite the long hours and large crowd.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively:
Working with fellow volunteers, Interact members, and Rotary partners showed me the importance of teamwork in achieving a common goal.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
By supporting literacy and inclusive education for government school students, this experience aligned with SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
I ensured fairness, equal opportunity, and ethical distribution of tokens and rewards for all children.
Overall, this CAS Service experience was both meaningful and rewarding. It allowed me to contribute positively to the community while developing important personal and collaborative skills. The experience reinforced the value of service, empathy, and partnerships in creating lasting social impact.
