Community Service (Service 1)

This community service experience was both meaningful and enriching, as it allowed me to share my interest in science while engaging students in an interactive and enjoyable way. It contributed to my personal growth by helping me become more open-minded and empathetic towards others. Additionally, teaching strengthened my appreciation for my own learning and the value of education. This experience addressed multiple CAS Learning Outcomes, as explained below.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Although I had some experience teaching before, this situation was more challenging because each student had a different pace of learning and level of understanding. I had to adjust the way I explained concepts to make them simpler and more engaging. Making science interesting required me to think of creative approaches and interactive methods. One of the biggest difficulties was explaining certain scientific terms in Gujarati, especially when students were familiar with different terms or meanings. Gradually, I adapted to this and improved my ability to communicate clearly, while also becoming more patient and flexible in my teaching style.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
This experience took place over several weekends, requiring regular participation and effort. I remained consistent in attending each session and actively contributing, even when it was challenging to manage alongside other responsibilities. Staying committed throughout helped maintain continuity in the students’ learning and showed my dedication to the activity. It also allowed me to build a better connection with the students over time.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working with other volunteers meant that teamwork played an important role. We coordinated our efforts, divided responsibilities, and supported each other to ensure that each session was conducted smoothly. By communicating effectively and planning together, we were able to create a more organized and positive learning environment. This experience highlighted how collaboration leads to better outcomes, as working as a team made the teaching process more effective and manageable.
