My CAS experience involved participating in Community Service, where I worked with a group of students to conduct art and craft workshops for children from government schools who visited our campus. We engaged them in creative activities such as drawing, painting, and craft-making to provide a safe and enjoyable learning environment. The aim was not only to teach art skills but also to create a space where the children felt confident expressing themselves. Through this experience, I aimed to contribute meaningfully to the community while developing my communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
LO 1: Identify Own Strengths & Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I discovered that one of my strengths is communicating effectively with younger children. I was able to explain instructions clearly, simplify tasks and make the children feel comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. I also noticed that I am naturally patient and encouraging, which helped hesitant students participate more confidently. However, I also identified an area for growth in managing larger groups. At times, when several children required attention simultaneously, I felt overwhelmed. Recognizing this helped me understand the importance of better coordination. By working more closely with my team members and dividing responsibilities, I improved my ability to manage the group more efficiently.
LO 4: Show Commitment and Perseverance in CAS Experiences
This experience required consistency and responsibility, especially as it was conducted over three weekends, almost a month. Even when managing energetic groups of children became challenging, I remained committed to ensuring that each child was engaged and supported. I made an effort to stay patient and enthusiastic throughout the sessions. My perseverance was reflected in how I adapted my approach when activities did not go as planned. Instead of feeling discouraged, I adjusted and collaborated with my peers to maintain a positive learning environment. This strengthened my sense of responsibility toward service-based initiatives.
LO 5: Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Collaboration was a key aspect of this activity. We divided roles, shared materials and supported one another while handling different groups of children. I realized that effective teamwork was really important for the success of the activity. When we communicated clearly and coordinated our efforts, the sessions ran smoothly. This experience reinforced the importance of cooperation, mutual support, and shared accountability. It also helped me understand that meaningful service is rarely an individual effort, rather it requires collective contribution and trust among team members.
