I took part in the three-day cross-country run at my school as part of my CAS activity. Two 3-kilometer runs and a final 5-kilometer run comprised the event.Since long-distance running is not something I usually participate in, this experience felt challenging from the start. However, I chose to participate to push myself beyond my comfort zone and test both my physical endurance and mental strength.
Taking part in cross country required me to be a risk-taker, as I was stepping into an activity I was unfamiliar with. The varying terrain and increasing distances were intimidating, but committing to the event encouraged me to face the challenge with confidence.
Learning outcomes :
LO1 – identifying my strengths and areas for growth.
Through this cross country run I became more aware of my physical capabilities and limitations as a result of the cross-country runs. I was able to keep up a steady pace over the longer distances without stopping, which showed me that my endurance was stronger than I had thought. This boosted my confidence and helped me recognise my ability to persist through physically demanding tasks. Simultaneously, I observed that my energy and pace decreased at the end of the runs, particularly on the 5 km route. This highlighted areas where I need to improve including my capacity for sprinting, my ability to recover, and my endurance.By thinking about these elements, I was able to establish reasonable objectives for future development and increase my awareness
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Uneven terrain and hilly stretches were among the difficulties encountered during the cross-country experience. These elements made the runs more difficult than typical track running and need ongoing modification. I had to step outside of my comfort zone and adjust both emotionally and physically in order to overcome these obstacles. As a result, I developed better pacing strategies to conserve energy, improved my breathing control to manage fatigue, and built resilience to continue running even when conditions were difficult.
LO4 – Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Participating in the cross-country event over several days demanded ongoing dedication and resolve. Each day brought its unique physical challenges, and there were times when pushing through felt mentally draining. Nevertheless, I stayed focused on finishing each run, keeping in mind the reasons I chose to take part in this experience. Completing all three days highlighted the significance of persistence and hard work.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Cross country running encourages health, fitness, and overall wellness, which are important in a world facing an increase in lifestyle-related illnesses. Through my involvement, I contributed to advocating for an active lifestyle and serving as a role model for others to appreciate the importance of physical activity.
Reflection
This CAS experience contributed to my development as a reflective learner. Following each run, I reflected on my performance, assessed my physical and mental state, and considered what I could enhance for the next time. The cross-country run was more than merely finishing distances; it was about gaining deeper insights into myself, accepting challenges, and acknowledging the broader significance of physical activity.
