Cross-Country

Introduction

As part of my CAS Activity component, I took part in multiple cross-country running events organized by my school, including two 3 km races and one 5 km race. This experience was not just about running but about testing my physical limits, building endurance, and strengthening my mindset. Cross-country running, with its unpredictable terrain and demanding nature, pushed me to step outside my comfort zone and develop discipline through consistent preparation.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

During this journey, I discovered that one of my key strengths is determination. Once I commit to a goal, I tend to stay consistent and push myself even when it gets difficult. I was able to maintain a steady pace during shorter runs, which showed my ability to manage energy efficiently. However, I also realized that my endurance over longer distances needs improvement. The 5 km race, in particular, exposed how easily fatigue can affect both my body and mindset, highlighting the need to build stronger stamina and mental focus.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken and new skills developed

Cross-country running presented several challenges, especially due to uneven paths, slopes, and varying ground conditions. Initially, it was difficult to adjust, but over time I learned how to control my breathing, maintain rhythm, and adapt my stride depending on the terrain. One of the biggest challenges was continuing to run despite exhaustion, and overcoming this helped me develop resilience and mental toughness.

Learning Outcome 3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience

To prepare effectively, I designed a simple but structured training routine for myself. I included regular running sessions, gradually increased my distance, and ensured I warmed up and stretched properly to avoid injuries. I also balanced my training with my academic workload, which required careful time management. This planning process helped me understand how important it is to set achievable goals and stay organized.

Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience

This activity required consistent effort over time. There were days when I felt tired or unmotivated, but I continued training because I was committed to improving. During the races, especially the 5 km run, I faced moments where I wanted to stop, but I pushed through and completed the race. This experience strengthened my perseverance and taught me the value of not giving up, even when things feel difficult.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Even though running is often seen as an individual sport, I experienced the importance of teamwork throughout this activity. Training with others helped me stay motivated and maintain a better pace. Seeing others push themselves encouraged me to do the same. The support and encouragement from teammates created a positive environment, making the experience more enjoyable and impactful.

Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This experience relates to the global importance of maintaining physical and mental health. In today’s fast-paced world, staying active is essential for overall well-being. By participating in cross-country running, I contributed to promoting a healthy lifestyle, which connects to Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout my participation, I ensured that I followed all rules and maintained fair play. I respected other runners, avoided any unfair advantage, and focused on completing the race honestly. I also made responsible choices by staying hydrated and taking care of my physical health. These actions reinforced the importance of integrity and responsibility in sports.

Conclusion

Overall, participating in these cross-country races was a valuable experience that helped me grow both physically and mentally. It improved my discipline, resilience, and ability to manage challenges. More importantly, it taught me that progress comes from consistent effort and a strong mindset. This CAS experience has had a lasting impact on me and will continue to influence how I approach future challenges.
