cross country – activity

As part of my CAS activity journey, I participated in my school’s cross-country running event spread across two days. On the first two days, I completed a 3 km run, while on the third, I pushed myself further to finish 5 km. This activity was both physically demanding and mentally stimulating, requiring endurance, discipline, and determination. At the beginning, I was apprehensive about whether I would be able to sustain my energy for such distances. However, once I began running, I found myself enjoying the challenge, especially the sense of rhythm that came with maintaining a steady pace. Running outdoors alongside peers created an encouraging atmosphere, which motivated me to push beyond my limits.

The experience was more than just a test of physical ability—it was also about self-discovery. I learned that long-distance running requires not only stamina but also mental resilience, as there were moments when I felt like slowing down but reminded myself to persevere. Completing both runs gave me a strong sense of achievement, and it showed me how consistency and determination can help overcome fatigue. Overall, this activity enriched my CAS journey by helping me grow in confidence, physical fitness, and perseverance, while also instilling a deeper appreciation for the discipline required in endurance sports.

Learning Outcomes

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During the cross-country event, I realized that one of my strengths lies in my ability to remain consistent with my pace. This helped me avoid exhaustion and complete both runs without stopping. However, I also recognized areas where I need to grow, such as improving my stamina to perform better over longer distances and maintaining a faster finishing pace. Identifying these strengths and weaknesses gave me a clearer understanding of my current fitness level and how I can work on enhancing it through future training and practice.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Running 3 km and 5 km was a significant challenge because I am not regularly used to such long distances. It required me to push past physical fatigue and overcome the mental temptation to stop midway. Through this, I developed new skills such as effective pacing, controlled breathing, and self-motivation techniques to sustain my performance. I also learned how to break a long run into smaller mental checkpoints, which helped me stay focused and determined. These skills are not only useful in running but also transferable to other areas of life where persistence and discipline are required.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Cross-country running demanded perseverance, as there were moments of tiredness where giving up felt easier. However, I committed myself to completing both runs, regardless of the distance or difficulty. My ability to stay consistent across two days demonstrated my commitment to the activity and to my CAS journey. By showing up, putting in effort, and completing the runs despite fatigue, I proved to myself that perseverance is the key to achieving goals. This experience has inspired me to stay committed in future CAS activities as well as in personal fitness routines.

Overall, this cross-country experience allowed me to reflect deeply on my personal strengths, areas for growth, and the importance of perseverance. It was not just about completing three runs—it was about building resilience, learning to motivate myself, and staying committed even when challenges arose. I came away from the activity with a stronger belief in my ability to overcome difficulties and with valuable lessons that I can apply to both academics and personal life. This CAS activity has shown me that growth often happens outside of our comfort zone, and I am motivated to continue seeking opportunities that challenge and inspire me.
