For my CAS experience, I participated in a Hindi Immersion activity and engaged with language and culture through drama performance and script writing. It was refreshing to leave the classroom setting and experience the Hindi language in a creative and dynamic way.
While I was involved, I worked with some friends to write and perform a short play in Hindi. Writing the play was an incredibly fun and challenging experience, it pushed my limits in acquiring new vocabulary, systematically thinking about how to put sentences together, and expressing feelings in a dialogue. Performing the piece allowed me to gain confidence in public speaking, and helped me understand the importance of tone, expression, and body language when communicating.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
I combatted the challenge of writing and performing a drama completely in Hindi. Expanding my vocabulary, creating sentences freely, and demonstrating feelings in another language was a struggle. Once I carried out the piece, I had to wait in anticipation if I was feeling the discomfort of “theatre” or if I was needed on stage, so it did force me to leave my comfort zone and build confidence. In the process, I learned new competencies like script writing, public speaking, and presence on the stage, but most important I was able to improve my communication not just in Hindi, but in general.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The process of creating a drama necessitated continuous teamwork. I worked in concert with others to brainstorm story, write the screenplay and then become immersed in rehearsals and the logistics of making the performance happen. Everyone brought their best ideas to the table, solved challenges, and ultimately learned how to think beyond one’s own thoughts. This experience educated me how effective collaboration boosts creativity and ultimately contributes to a performance that is ultimately much better than one could accomplish alone.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The performance embedded cultural values and traditions, driving me and the audience to relate aspects of Indian heritage. I was able to promote cultural appreciation and global understanding through the use of drama to promote the Hindi language and cultural storytelling. This experience opened my eyes to the idea that performing arts can be used to bridge cultural gaps and promote diversity.
Conclusion
From a CAS standpoint, this experience improved my Creativity as I was required to write and perform, Activity due to performing and practicing, and Service for the awareness of the culture to my colleagues. It also developed crucial life skills such as teamwork, time management, and adaptability, as refining the play required a collaborative effort and problem-solving aspects.
In summary, the Hindi immersion course through Drama was a unique learning experience that not only enhanced my Hindi skills but also allowed me to gain a greater connection to cultural expression and working creatively together.
