Project Description

For this CAS project, I organized and executed the FS Blitz Chess Tournament 3.0, designed as a two-tiered competition featuring separate divisions for Grades 7–10 and Grades 11–12. The objective was to cultivate strategic thinking, mental agility, and structured, healthy competition within the school community. I managed the complete lifecycle of the event—including designing the tournament structure, setting up fixtures and timing rules, coordinating registrations, managing logistics, and acting as the head referee to ensure sportsmanship and fair play.

To cap off the event, I conceptualized and hosted a high-stakes Final Championship Round consisting of the top three players from each division (a total of six finalists). This cross-divisional playoff brought together players of different age groups to crown the overall School Blitz Champion. Executing this event required precise organization, quick decision-making under pressure, active conflict resolution, and large-group management.

Learning Outcomes (LOs) Demonstrated

  • LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growthRunning the tournament highlighted my natural strengths in systematic planning, structural organization, and large-group communication. However, it also revealed areas for growth, particularly the need to make rapid, assertive decisions during sudden scheduling delays and complicated tiebreaker scenarios.
  • LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skillsSimultaneously overseeing two independent tournament brackets while managing real-time participant disputes pushed me out of my comfort zone. This challenge directly helped me refine my crisis management, adaptive time management, and situational leadership skills.
  • LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experienceThe entire project was self-initiated and independently designed from scratch. I developed the overall tournament framework, set event timelines, created registration forms, drafted rule sheets, coordinated school-wide communications, and managed venue logistics. Following this detailed blueprint from inception to the final ceremony demonstrated my capability to plan and execute a complex, multi-stage event.
  • LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experienceSustaining high energy and attention to detail across multiple days of matches, preliminary rounds, and the final playoffs required sustained dedication. I remained committed to managing every single fixture meticulously, ensuring every match was conducted fairly regardless of time constraints.
  • LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaborativelyExecuting an event of this scale was impossible without effective teamwork. I collaborated closely with supervising teachers to secure facilities, co-managed timekeeping and match logging with student volunteers, and communicated transparently with participants. This teamwork maintained accurate scorekeeping and a smooth match flow.
  • LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actionsAs the organizer and chief arbiter, every decision I made directly impacted the integrity of the tournament. I had to remain strictly impartial when resolving subtle rule disputes, enforcing time forfeits, and interpreting tiebreak regulations. Prioritizing transparency, equal opportunity, and absolute fairness over personal biases or participant pressure ensured an ethical environment for all competitors.

Reflection

Hosting the FS Blitz Chess Tournament 3.0 was one of the most fulfilling leadership and organizational experiences of my IB journey. Bringing together two distinct age groups and culminating in an intense six-player grand finale challenged me to remain composed, structured, and strictly impartial at every turn. Balancing strict time limits, resolving high-stress disputes on the board, and maintaining player satisfaction required constant adaptation.

Beyond the logistical execution, seeing players across different grade levels passionately engage in strategic play made the entire effort worthwhile. The final championship round showcased exceptional talent and camaraderie within our school. Ultimately, this project did not just sharpen my event management and communication capabilities—it taught me the true value of ethical responsibility, patience, and meticulous planning when leading a community initiative.
