Type of CAS: Service Location: In school.
My community service experience was both fascinating and deeply fulfilling. This enriching journey offered me a unique opportunity to learn, teach, and interact with students through fun and engaging activities that sparked their passion, curiosity, and enthusiasm. It also enabled me to share my love for the sport of Frisbee, teaching them fundamental skills and techniques over the course of six days—a process that I found both rewarding and enjoyable. This experience contributed significantly to my personal growth in ways I had never anticipated. Engaging in something meaningful for the community instilled in me a profound sense of pride and accomplishment. Moreover, it allowed me to connect with children from diverse backgrounds across three different schools, broadening my perspective and deepening my appreciation for inclusivity and teamwork. Through this initiative, I successfully addressed all the CAS Learning Outcomes (LOs), which are detailed below.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Throughout this enriching experience, I was able to recognize my strengths and identify areas for further growth as I discovered the students’ genuine enthusiasm for Frisbee. We had planned a variety of engaging activities and drills, which I helped execute successfully through teamwork and effective communication. Regular interactions with the students and feedback collection after each session enabled me to reflect critically on my performance and make meaningful improvements to our plans. I realized that service extends beyond teaching technical skills—it also involves creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every student feels valued. Through this process, I became more aware of my existing strengths, such as teamwork, social interaction, and self-management. At the same time, I identified leadership as an area for growth, which I actively developed by supervising over thirty students across multiple groups. This experience strengthened my ability to lead, organize, and adapt in dynamic situations, contributing significantly to my personal and interpersonal development.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Over the span of six days of service, I encountered several challenges, particularly managing a large group of students from different schools simultaneously. While many students were enthusiastic and actively engaged in the games, a few were occasionally uncooperative, inattentive, or distracted, requiring me to repeat key instructions multiple times. Despite these hurdles, each day concluded successfully according to our planned schedule. These challenges proved to be valuable learning experiences, helping me cultivate greater patience, resilience, and open-mindedness. I also came to appreciate the diversity of learning styles among the children—each student approached the activities with their own unique creativity and energy. This encouraged me to think innovatively and design new drills that made learning Frisbee techniques—such as forehand and backhand throws and catching skills—more interactive and enjoyable. As the sessions progressed, I noticed a marked improvement in my communication skills. Each day, I interacted with both familiar and newly enrolled students, and by conversing in their preferred languages—Hindi and Gujarati—I was able to bridge cultural gaps and build stronger connections. Ultimately, these efforts transformed the initial challenges into meaningful opportunities for growth and success.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This CAS experience holds a special place in my memory, as it was the first time I had the opportunity to lead such a large group of students. Throughout the process, I collaborated closely with my peers to design and implement engaging activities that would captivate and motivate the students. Each day presented a new agenda, ensuring that the sessions remained dynamic and exciting. One of the main challenges we faced was that most of the students were complete beginners in playing Frisbee, with little to no prior experience. This required us to start from the fundamentals and gradually progress through more advanced drills over the course of the sessions. We also had to make several on-the-spot adjustments whenever certain activities failed to capture the students’ interest. To address this, we prepared alternative backup plans, allowing us to adapt quickly and keep every session productive and enjoyable. Through this experience, I significantly strengthened my leadership abilities. Monitoring and guiding a large number of students while generating creative solutions in real time taught me to think critically, stay composed, and lead with flexibility. Ultimately, this CAS journey allowed me to view service through the lens of a leader—one who learns, adapts, and grows alongside others.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
This CAS experience allowed me to demonstrate my full commitment and perseverance, which were evident through my active participation in the six-day community service program held over three consecutive weekends. My consistent involvement reflected a genuine dedication to creating a positive impact within the community. Rather than viewing it merely as an opportunity to complete service hours, I approached each day as a meaningful experience filled with learning, connection, and personal growth. This experience not only strengthened my sense of responsibility but also deepened my passion for service. Each weekend, I devoted my time to engaging with students, teaching them new Frisbee skills, and fostering an inclusive environment where everyone felt valued and encouraged. Through sustained effort and enthusiasm, I was able to contribute meaningfully to the students’ learning while developing my own perseverance, discipline, and empathy.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
During the community service program, I successfully demonstrated strong social skills, which were especially evident as my peers and I—volunteers from Grades 11 and 12—collaboratively divided responsibilities to manage the Frisbee sessions for over 100 students. Recognizing that working independently would be challenging given the large number of participants, we strategically allocated roles based on the students’ schools. My Grade 11 team, including myself and two friends, took responsibility for instructing one school, while the Grade 12 volunteers focused on others. This structured approach underscored the importance of effective teamwork and clear division of duties. By working collaboratively and assigning tasks according to our strengths and the schools we were responsible for, we were able to teach the students Frisbee in a more efficient, organized, and impactful way. This experience deepened my appreciation for cooperation and the power of collective effort in achieving shared goals.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
This engagement aligns closely with Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty, and Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. Poverty, lack of education, and inadequate healthcare are pervasive global challenges, and by providing inclusive educational opportunities through the sport of Frisbee, I was able to contribute meaningfully to addressing these issues. Playing Frisbee not only promotes physical health and well-being but also fosters social inclusion and empowerment among underprivileged students. I applied creative thinking to design a variety of activities and drills tailored to these students, ensuring they remained engaged and connected throughout each session. Teaching them afforded me a valuable opportunity to understand and empathize with the obstacles they face in their daily lives, further deepening my awareness of these critical global issues.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Teaching the students how to throw and catch a Frisbee, while encouraging collaboration among them within the same school, helped me embrace the values of equality and respect. I learned to treat each student fairly, valuing their opinions and actions without bias or differentiation from students at other schools. Providing them with equal opportunities and empowering them to raise their voices became a fundamental aspect of this community service experience, enriching my CAS journey.
In a nutshell, this CAS experience as part of the service initiative was truly remarkable, marking the beginning of a new journey where I discovered fresh interests and a passion for teaching fundamental Frisbee skills. It facilitated my growth in a unique and meaningful way, significantly enhancing my personal development. My engagement with the students was deeply rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my knowledge and expertise with such bright and innovative young minds.
