My CAS experience involved participating in FS Community Service, where I worked alongside a group of students to lead and facilitate visual arts workshops for children from local government schools at Fountainhead School over three weekends. The workshops included activities such as origami, finger painting, and string painting. The primary goal of this initiative was to create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds could freely express themselves through art. Personally, I aimed to use creativity as a medium to connect with the students, encourage collaboration, and make learning enjoyable while developing my own leadership, communication, and empathy skills.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify Own Strengths & Develop Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I became aware of my strength in communicating with younger children and making them feel comfortable in unfamiliar spaces. I noticed that I was able to explain activities patiently and adapt my approach based on each child’s needs. However, I also recognized a weakness in managing large groups, especially when multiple children needed attention simultaneously. Becoming aware of this made me more self-reflective rather than discouraged. Knowing our strengths and weaknesses is important because it allows us to consciously improve and become more effective individuals. I actively tried to work on this weakness by coordinating with my teammates and learning to delegate tasks, which would have benefited me earlier in academic group projects as well.
Learning Outcome 2: Undertake Challenges & Develop New Skills
One of the main challenges was engaging children who were initially hesitant or lacked confidence in their artistic abilities. This was challenging because each child responded differently, and some were afraid of making mistakes. I had not worked extensively with children from such diverse backgrounds before, so this was a new experience. I overcame this by encouraging them gently, appreciating their efforts, and reminding them that art has no “right” or “wrong.” Through this, I developed skills such as adaptability, encouragement, and creative problem-solving. These skills will be useful in the future when working in team environments or leadership roles. Undertaking this challenge made me feel more confident and reinforced the importance of continuously learning new skills.
Learning Outcome 3: Initiate & Plan a CAS Experience
Planning this activity required coordination, preparation of materials, and clear division of responsibilities within the team. I organized myself by ensuring I understood the structure of each workshop and was prepared to assist wherever needed. While initiating the activity was exciting, planning was more difficult as it required anticipating potential issues, such as time constraints or student engagement. During this process, I discovered organizational and communication skills that I hadn’t fully recognized before. This experience has made me more confident in planning and initiating activities in the future. Learning how to plan effectively is important because it ensures smoother execution and maximizes the impact of any initiative.
Learning Outcome 4: Show Commitment & Perseverance
This activity required commitment in terms of attending all three weekends consistently and maintaining energy and enthusiasm throughout long workshop sessions. At times, managing fatigue while still being fully present for the children was challenging. However, my commitment to the purpose of the activity motivated me to persevere. While committing to long-term activities can be difficult, this experience showed me that perseverance is essential to creating meaningful impact. Staying committed allowed me to build stronger connections with the children and my peers, reinforcing the value of responsibility and consistency.
Learning Outcome 5: Work Collaboratively & Recognize its Benefits
Working collaboratively was an essential part of this experience. While teamwork is generally comfortable for me, coordinating with different personalities and teaching styles required patience and flexibility. At times, differing opinions arose, but we resolved them through communication and mutual respect. Teamwork was crucial in managing the workshops effectively, as no single person could handle all responsibilities alone. This experience reinforced the importance of collaboration, leadership, and mutual support in achieving a shared goal.
Learning Outcome 6: Engage with Issues of Global Significance
This activity addressed the global issue of educational inequality, particularly the lack of access to creative learning opportunities for children from under-resourced communities. Education and creative expression are globally significant because they contribute to emotional development, confidence, and critical thinking. Becoming aware of this issue made me more appreciative of my own privileges and motivated me to contribute positively. Knowing that our efforts provided these children with a platform for self-expression made the experience deeply fulfilling and meaningful.
Learning Outcome 7: Consider the Ethics of Choices & Actions
Ethical considerations included ensuring that all children were treated equally, respectfully, and without bias. It was important to be culturally sensitive and avoid making assumptions about their abilities or backgrounds. These ethical choices affected me directly, as they shaped how I interacted with the students. This experience reinforced my belief that empathy and respect are essential when working in community service. My perspective remained consistent but became more deeply rooted through real-world application.
Final Takeaway
This CAS experience helped me develop learner profile attributes such as being caring, communicative, and reflective. It also connected to my academic subjects by enhancing my understanding of human interaction, creativity, and social responsibility. The activity benefited others by providing children with a safe space to explore creativity and feel valued. The highlight for me was seeing the children proudly display their artwork and grow more confident over time. I experienced a strong sense of accomplishment and enjoyment, knowing that my efforts had a positive impact. If I were to repeat this activity, I would focus more on structured group management. The learning from this experience will guide me in future community initiatives, and I hope to continue contributing to society through creative and inclusive service projects.
