For my creativity, I chose to visit an old age home and help the residents there have a nice day. In this class creativity experience, I and my classmates visited an old age home where we contributed to the society by teaching many of the residents there some creative activities, some songs, and some activities that we had creatively planned. Firstly, we went there and introduced ourselves to the residents. Most of the residents didn’t have an actual home or were lost or abandoned by their family members. Ensuring to showcase our sympathy, we managed to act very kindly. We managed to be kind towards them, show a lot of respect, and show sympathy for them, as they are very brave to live away from home. Even though they don’t have anyone visiting them every day, we ensured that this one visit was the best visit that they ever would have. We planned some activities for them to do, such as making creative new drawings on papers, creating origami, which was really a new experience for us and for them, and learning about new songs that we sung, and we had a little group singing project. Moreover, when we went there, we saw that how limited the resources were at that old age home. Feeling sympathy, we introduced ourselves to the residents and we asked them that where do you live here? What’s your name? What’s your age? How come you are living at this old age home and not at your house? Do you have any recent family members? Questions like that ensured that they get involved with us and trust us with their experiences as well. To showcase our creativity, we indulged in many creative activities alongside the residents, which included singing, paper craft, and many other kinds of activities which included introductory ice breaking activity with a bouncy ball and some lectures about spirituality and making it better in life.
LO2 demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills.
When visiting an old age home it is common for students to feel a lot of sympathy and emotion for the residents living there. There were some residents over there which didn’t have a home or had dementia and didn’t remember any of their family members or where their home was. They were lost and then they were kept at this old age home never to go home. When we went there we saw the conditions in which they lived which were really limited for around 10 to 15 people. Now in that kind of quantity it is necessary for the old age home to have proper facilities and spacing. However, the home didn’t have that much space to accommodate all the people comfortably and hence they had to adjust a lot. When we reached there we saw how some residents forgot what they were doing had dementia or didn’t realize what they were talking about and then when we heard the story from their caretaker we all felt a lot of emotion and sympathy for them as some of them were abandoned by their own family members and the just the thought of that urged us to take care of them and help them have a nice day since we felt a lot of sympathy for them and we couldn’t even imagine doing that to our own family members. The challenges that were undertaken were controlling our own emotions while visiting the place and demonstrating that new skills such as singing communication then thinking skills and a lot of many transfer and social skills were used in this process and were developed. The emotional challenges were a lot faced by all the students and the teachers that accompanied us to the visit as we were putting out a service to the society as well as engaging in our creativity. We developed our creative skills by engaging in many activities alongside the residents and we also urged the residents to participate in many creative activities such as many speeches introductory ice-breaking activities art and crafts singing and much much more. Hence this learning outcome was achieved by us and some of the challenges that were undertaken were time management emotional challenges social skills and communication skills.
LO3 Initiate and plan a CAS experience.
During this CAS experience, we had about a week’s planning beforehand before we went to the old age home to visit. We gathered all of our team members alongside the teachers and we brainstormed many creative activity ideas which we could perform and play with the residents of the old age home. For a week, we we engaged in hard work and planning with all our team members, showing our collaborative skills and communication skills with each other. We took opinions from each and everyone, as well as our teachers, on what activity would suit the best for old age home residents. Something that would be easy to play and understand, as well as fun to play. We decided that we could do some traditional songs, we could sing them and clap with all the other residents, engaging in a kind of group singing gathering which would really make it fun for the residents to sing along. Moreover, we played a traditional game called Antakshari where we play the song of the games. Now, if someone sings a song whose lyrics end with A, the next person that they choose has to sing a song which lyrics start from the letter A. That way, every resident and every student was involved in this activity, and we had a lot of fun. Moreover, we asked them what kind of game they want to play. Some of the residents said that they were good in Dumb Charades and exceptionally, they were. We gave them a lot of prompts such as a dress, some hair, a TV, and then they acted it out beautifully and most of us were able to guess it. We engaged in group singing and cultural songs alongside the residents and they were so excited that they also started to sing along and dance a little. This made us really happy as they were enjoying their day, showing that our initiation and planning of this CAS experience was a success. Additionally, we also planned some icebreaker activities where one person throws a bouncy ball into another’s lap and then they have to introduce themselves. Furthermore, we also engaged with the residents in art and craft. We taught them basic origami and basic drawing, anything that they wanted to do. And they all enjoyed it very much. Most of the residents started to make paper planes, paper boats. Even many made some nice doodles and sketches. Throughout our planning of this CAS experience, we showed our collaboration and management skills and commitment to this CAS experience to show how we can give towards society while developing our creative skills as well. Throughout the planning of this CAS experience, we came up with creative ideas where we could include all the old age home residents and help them have fun on a day where we come to visit them. We made sure that all of them had fun and all of them had a change in their daily lifestyle.
LO5 demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
Throughout this CAS experience, if we had not collaborated with our teammates and the people who are planning this CAS experience, we couldn’t have managed to make it a success. Since we were students in a very less quantity, it was important that each one of us gave their best and their meaningful time towards this CAS experience. Furthermore, each one of us had the duty to come up with different activities for the residents of the old age home so that they could enjoy and it would be easier for them to engage in that activity. During this experience, we developed our communication and social skills as well as our creative and collaborative skills, showcasing that we could work as a team and showcase our creativity through planning such CAS experiences. We committed to this work and we were dedicated to make sure that the residents there had a fun day full of activities and games that could strip them away from their daily lives and show them a kind of fun change on their day. With collaboration, we managed to engage all the residents in group singing, arts and craft, and we listened carefully to their conversations and whatever they were saying to us and inspiring us on how to make our future a better a a success and how to study hard and work hard so that you can earn a living and live independently on your own and become successful in the future. Many of the residents were so happy that we came to visit them since no one in their family would visit them very often. Since we felt so much sympathy and emotion for the old age home residents, we collaboratively thanked them for being so wise and being a milestone in our lives and theirs. We thank them because they were they were the ones who inspired us to give back to the community and plan this creative experience. We wanted to thank them as we thank our own elders in our own homes. We told them that you are just like our family, just like our elders at our homes. And they felt really happy because they had not seen their family in so many months. We as a team, as all our classmates together collaboratively planned this CAS experience to give back to the society and creatively showcase our skills in planning a CAS experience which showcases creative games and activities indulging the old age home residents and making sure sure that they have a fun day.
In conclusion, this old age home visit was an experience to remember as we were not only helping the old age home residents but we were helping someone who reminded all of us of our elder elders in our family. We showed our empathy and emotion towards them and we made sure to be kind and show respect towards the elders and make sure that they have a fun day. It is really important that everybody in this world gets at least a few days or a few hours of fun every single day. Now since it was not possible for us to travel over to the home every day to give them a fun day full of activities, we made sure that these couple of days were worth the wait and worth the fun. The residents at the old age home thanked us and we felt really grateful that we were able to give back to the community at such an opportunity. Me with my teammates and teachers were really engaged with the residents and had a lot of fun talking to them, understanding their daily life and understanding how they live so peacefully even though they know that they are really lonely in this world. We were really interested to know how their day starts, what they do every day, what they cook, what they eat, what they play with each other every day, what they talk about, the news or something that is going on in the world. Throughout this experience, we developed our creative skills and our planning to showcase how working collaboratively as a team could really help to achieve something that is not only counted as a service but counted as creative planning. With group singing sessions, ice-breaking activities, paper planes, art and crafts and a lot more, we were able to make this old age home visit a success.
