LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
The visit helped me recognise my strengths in communication, empathy, and connecting with others. Chatting with the residents and singing bhajans together helped me become more comfortable interacting with people from different generations. I also realised that I could improve my confidence in initiating conversations with unfamiliar people. The experience taught me that being a good communicator is not just about speaking but also about listening and showing genuine interest in others.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Interacting with elderly residents challenged me to step outside my usual social environment. Initially, I was unsure how to approach conversations, but I gradually became more comfortable through chatting, singing bhajans, and sharing laughs. This helped me develop my communication, patience, and listening skills. I learned that trying something unfamiliar can lead to enjoyable and meaningful experiences.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
The visit required preparation and consideration of how we could make our time with the residents enjoyable and meaningful. Activities such as singing bhajans and chatting gave us opportunities to interact with them beyond simply visiting the home. I learned that planning a CAS experience involves considering the interests and comfort of others while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the situation.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Throughout the visit, I made an effort to participate actively and engage with the residents. By joining conversations, singing bhajans, and enjoying activities together, I contributed to creating a friendly atmosphere. The experience taught me that commitment involves being genuinely present and making an effort to connect with others, even when interactions initially feel unfamiliar.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
Working with my peers helped make the visit enjoyable and engaging. Singing bhajans together created a sense of connection between the students and residents, while our conversations and shared laughter made the experience more memorable. I learned that teamwork involves communicating, supporting one another, and contributing to a welcoming environment.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The visit encouraged me to reflect on the social inclusion and emotional well-being of elderly people. Spending time with the residents helped me appreciate the importance of companionship and intergenerational connections. I realised that simple activities, such as having conversations and singing together, can provide opportunities for meaningful interaction and help people feel valued and included.
LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
The experience reminded me of the importance of treating elderly residents with dignity, empathy, and respect. I learned to approach conversations without making assumptions about their experiences and to recognise their individual personalities and preferences. It also helped me understand that community service should involve genuine engagement rather than simply fulfilling a requirement.
