As part of my CAS Service, I participated in Bal Mela, a school-organized event where we engaged with children from a government school through various creative and interactive activities. I was a member of the face painting team, where children could choose from a range of pre-decided design options. Our role was to paint the selected designs carefully and ensure that each child had an enjoyable experience. This activity allowed me to contribute to the community while developing personal, interpersonal, and practical skills.
CAS Learning Outcomes
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During the face painting activity, I identified patience and calmness as two of my key strengths. Working with young children requires understanding and composure, especially when they are excited or restless. I was able to remain patient while listening to their choices and ensuring they felt comfortable throughout the process.
However, I also recognized clear areas for growth. Although I did not create the designs myself and the children selected from given options, some of the designs were detailed and required precision. At the beginning of the event, I struggled to replicate certain designs exactly as shown in the reference images. My lines were not always as clean, and I sometimes felt slightly unsure about my technique. Instead of feeling discouraged, I continued practicing with each child. By the end of the event, I noticed a significant improvement in my control and confidence. I was able to recreate specific designs more neatly and accurately. This experience helped me understand that growth happens through consistent effort and that stepping into unfamiliar tasks allows me to recognize both my strengths and areas needing development.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the main challenges I faced was managing intricate designs under time pressure. Some children chose designs that required fine detailing and steady hands, even though many others were waiting in line. Balancing quality with efficiency was not easy. I initially felt slightly pressured because I did not want to disappoint the children or make them wait too long.
To overcome this, I focused on improving my hand control and concentration. I learned to break down the design into smaller sections and complete it step by step rather than rushing through it. This helped me maintain quality while managing time better. Additionally, working continuously without long breaks required stamina and focus. Through this challenge, I developed better precision, improved my ability to work under mild pressure, and strengthened my time-management skills. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me gain confidence in handling responsibilities independently.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Bal Mela required consistent dedication throughout the event. There was a constant flow of children coming to our station, and the work did not slow down. Even when I started feeling tired, I remained committed to my responsibility. I ensured that each child received equal effort and attention, regardless of how long I had already been working.
Perseverance was especially important towards the end of the event when energy levels were lower but the enthusiasm of the children remained high. I continued to maintain a positive attitude and careful execution of designs. This experience strengthened my understanding of commitment — that true service involves giving consistent effort until the very end, not just when it feels easy. It taught me responsibility and accountability toward the role I had undertaken.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Although I was part of the face painting team, there were multiple activity stations operating simultaneously, including a separate hand tattoo station. Many children approached our station asking for hand tattoos instead of face paintings. In such situations, we had to politely redirect them to the correct team. This required clear communication and coordination among volunteers to avoid confusion.
Working collaboratively ensured that the event ran smoothly. We supported one another in managing the crowd, organizing the queue, and clarifying instructions to the children. By respecting each team’s designated role and communicating effectively, we maintained order and prevented misunderstandings. This experience highlighted the importance of teamwork in large-scale service events and showed me how collaboration increases efficiency and reduces stress for everyone involved.
LO6 – Engage with issues of global significance
Through Bal Mela, I engaged with the broader issue of social inequality in access to recreational and creative opportunities. Children from underprivileged backgrounds may not regularly experience events that allow them to explore creativity in a safe and supportive environment. By volunteering in this activity, I contributed to creating a space where they could express themselves freely and feel valued.
This experience made me more aware of my social responsibility and privilege. It reminded me that even simple creative interactions can bring happiness and confidence to children. Engaging directly with them allowed me to understand the importance of inclusion and equal opportunity. It reinforced the idea that service is not only about helping others but also about becoming more socially aware and empathetic.
Reflection
Overall, Bal Mela was a meaningful and enriching CAS Service experience. It allowed me to step outside my routine and interact closely with children from different backgrounds. I developed practical skills such as precision, concentration, and time management, while also strengthening personal qualities like patience, perseverance, and responsibility. This experience helped me understand that service is not measured by the scale of the activity but by the sincerity and commitment with which it is performed.
