CAS Reflection Blog – Community Service Visit with an NGO

As part of my CAS journey, I participated in a community service visit to an NGO called Ram Krishna Mission dedicated to supporting underprivileged families mainly in Surat and Dang. During this experience, I observed how the NGO provides free meals to those in need and has built a study shed where children can learn in a safe and supportive environment. I interacted with the volunteers, learned about the NGO’s initiatives, and gained a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children and families who have limited access to basic necessities such as food and education.

This experience exposed me to the realities of poverty and inequality while demonstrating how collective efforts can improve the quality of life for disadvantaged communities. It encouraged me to appreciate the opportunities I have and inspired me to contribute towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate society.

Learning Outcome 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through this experience, I recognized empathy and compassion as two of my strengths. I was able to connect with the children and appreciate the importance of supporting those in need. At the same time, I realized that I can further develop my communication and leadership skills by becoming more actively involved in future community service initiatives and interacting confidently with people from diverse backgrounds.

Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One of the challenges I faced was understanding the realities experienced by underprivileged communities without making assumptions about their circumstances. Observing their daily lives and interacting respectfully with volunteers helped me develop empathy, active listening, and social awareness. This experience strengthened my ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds and taught me the importance of approaching social issues with sensitivity and respect.

Learning Outcome 3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Although the visit was organized by my school, I demonstrated initiative by actively participating throughout the experience and making the most of every opportunity to learn. I engaged with volunteers, observed the NGO’s projects closely, and reflected on how similar initiatives can positively impact communities. My willingness to participate wholeheartedly helped me gain meaningful insights from the experience.

Learning Outcome 4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

I remained fully engaged throughout the visit by participating attentively in every activity and learning about the NGO’s work. I listened carefully to the experiences shared by the volunteers and remained committed to understanding the challenges faced by the community. This experience reinforced the importance of consistently supporting social initiatives rather than viewing community service as a one-time activity.

Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

The experience highlighted the importance of teamwork in community service. The NGO’s volunteers worked together to organize food distribution, maintain the study shed, and support the children’s learning. Observing their cooperation helped me understand how effective communication, shared responsibility, and collaboration enable organizations to make a greater impact. I also worked respectfully alongside my peers throughout the visit, contributing to a positive and supportive environment.

Learning Outcome 6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

This CAS experience increased my awareness of global issues such as poverty, hunger, unequal access to education, and social inequality. I realized that many children still lack opportunities that others often take for granted, including nutritious food and a proper place to study. Witnessing the NGO’s efforts showed me how local initiatives can contribute towards addressing global challenges and creating sustainable improvements within communities.

Learning Outcome 7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

The visit encouraged me to reflect on my own responsibilities towards society. I realized that everyone has an ethical responsibility to support those who are less fortunate and to use their resources responsibly. Seeing how the NGO worked to provide equal opportunities for children reinforced the importance of fairness, compassion, and service. This experience motivated me to make more socially responsible choices and continue contributing to initiatives that promote equality and community well-being.

SDGs Connection

This community service experience connected strongly with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 – No Poverty, SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 4 – Quality Education, and SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities. By observing the NGO’s efforts to provide nutritious meals and a dedicated learning space for children, I gained a better understanding of how these global goals are interconnected. The experience reinforced the importance of community-driven initiatives in improving access to basic needs and educational opportunities, while inspiring me to contribute towards building a more equitable and inclusive society.

These photos show 3 instances, one in which I helped provide clothes to tribal farmers in Dang, second in which I helped in feeding medicine to a school, another in which I helped serve food and at last one in which I encouraged them to speak poems or sing songs as part of their education and entertainment.
