Learning Outcomes
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:
During the trek, I became more aware of my ability to motivate others and maintain a positive attitude even when I was tired. I also recognised that I need to improve my physical endurance and preparation for physically demanding activities. This helped me understand the importance of balancing academics with physical activity and personal well-being.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:
As I am not naturally a long-distance hiker, the trek was a significant personal challenge. I learned how to pace myself, conserve energy, manage fatigue, and remain focused throughout the journey. I also developed greater mental discipline and patience, which are skills that can be applied to challenges beyond trekking.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience:
Although the trek was organised by the school, I still had to prepare myself for the experience by ensuring that I had the appropriate equipment, clothing, water, and other necessities. I also had to manage my energy and plan how to approach the difficult sections of the trail. This taught me that preparation and planning are important for completing an activity safely and successfully.
LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences:
Completing the trek required commitment and perseverance. There were moments when fatigue made the journey difficult, but I continued rather than giving up. The encouragement of my classmates helped me stay motivated, and I also tried to encourage others when they were struggling. Completing the trek gave me a sense of accomplishment and showed me the value of remaining committed when facing difficulties.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively:
The trek strengthened my teamwork and collaboration skills. My classmates and I supported one another by sharing equipment, encouraging each other, and making sure that everyone stayed together. I learned that cooperation and communication can make a physically demanding experience easier to manage. The experience also showed me that group morale can have a significant impact on how people respond to challenges.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance:
Being surrounded by nature made me more aware of environmental issues and the importance of protecting natural spaces. I realised that outdoor activities can have an impact on the environment if participants are not responsible. This encouraged me to think about sustainability, waste management, and the importance of preserving natural areas for future generations.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions:
The trek made me consider the responsibility that comes with using natural spaces. Decisions such as avoiding littering, respecting the surroundings, staying on appropriate trails, and not damaging the environment are important ethical choices. I recognised that individual actions may seem small, but responsible behaviour collectively helps protect natural environments. This experience encouraged me to be more conscious of my environmental impact during future outdoor activities.
Conclusion
This trekking experience strengthened my determination, teamwork, resilience, and environmental awareness. It taught me that perseverance is developed through continuing to make progress even when a task becomes difficult. Working alongside my classmates also showed me how encouragement and cooperation can turn individual challenges into shared achievements. Most importantly, the experience helped me appreciate the natural environment and understand the responsibility involved in protecting it. It encouraged me to continue developing my physical endurance, collaboration skills, and sustainable approach to outdoor activities.
