I took part in a Children’s Carnival as part of my CAS Service strand, where my friends and I built up an interactive booth with the subject Empathy, Kindness, and Inclusion. Our goal was to have enjoyable and developmentally appropriate discussions with kids about peaceful decision-making and conflict resolution. We encouraged kids to think critically, listen to others, and work together to find just answers to common problems through an exercise called “Peace Detectives.” I was able to help the community and gain valuable interpersonal and personal skills from this experience. At our stall, children were presented with short, relatable conflict scenarios such as disagreements between friends, sharing issues, or misunderstandings during playtime. The students acted as “detectives,” carefully listening to each situation and discussing possible fair and peaceful solutions. After sharing their ideas, the group voted on the best response, which promoted respectful dialogue and collective decision-making. This activity not only made learning enjoyable but also helped children understand the value of empathy, kindness, and inclusion in resolving conflicts calmly.
LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growthI was able to identify my strengths in talking with younger kids and providing clear, interesting explanations of concepts thanks to this experience. But I also came to the realisation that I need to improve my confidence in leading big groups and making sure all the kids feel included in conversations.
LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skillsKeeping the kids’ interest while making sure the activity was organised and relevant was one of the biggest problems. This helped me learn how to be flexible, solve problems, and make decisions quickly especially when kids interpreted situations in unexpected ways.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
From choosing the topic and activity structure to developing situations appropriate for various age groups, the stall took meticulous planning. Working together during the preparation phase ensured that the exercise was both instructive and entertaining, demonstrating careful planning and execution.
LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiencesI stayed dedicated to the event despite moments of exhaustion and sporadic pandemonium brought on my elevated energy levels. I made sure the exercise went smoothly from beginning to end, attentively explained scenarios, and regularly interacted with the kids.
LO 5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaborativelyCollaborating with other friends was crucial to the stall’s success. We split up the work, helped one another out when things became hectic, and exchanged suggestions to make the activity better right away. This partnership demonstrated how cooperation results in more efficient and pleasurable service encounters.
Beyond just teaching kids about conflict resolution, the Children’s Carnival and our Peace Detectives stall was a significant CAS Service experience. It gave me the chance to consider my own principles, improve my social skills, and realise how crucial empathy and inclusivity are to creating harmonious societies. This event strengthened my conviction that modest, considerate deeds can have a beneficial effect and promote long-term social harmony.
