I participated in a Christmas carnival organized for underprivileged children from a government school. During the event, I managed a game stall where children played an interactive game designed to be both fun and educational. The game integrated ideas of sustainability, ensuring that the children learned important concepts while enjoying the activity. Children who won the game received tokens, which they could later exchange for gifts.
LO 1 Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
This experience helped me recognize strengths such as creativity, patience, and communication with younger children. I also identified areas for growth, particularly in managing large groups of energetic children and explaining concepts in a simple and engaging manner.
LO 2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Managing the stall presented several challenges, including maintaining order, ensuring fair play, and keeping the children engaged. Through this, I developed skills in leadership, crowd management, and adapting my communication style to suit different age groups.
LO 3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
The stall required prior planning, including designing the game, incorporating sustainability concepts, and organizing the token reward system. This planning ensured that the activity ran smoothly and that the educational objective was achieved alongside entertainment.
LO 4 Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Throughout the carnival, I remained committed to my role despite long hours and constant activity. I consistently engaged with each child, explained the game patiently, and ensured that everyone had a fair and enjoyable experience.
LO 5 Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The carnival was a team effort involving multiple volunteers managing different stalls. I collaborated with other volunteers to coordinate token distribution and gift exchanges. This highlighted the importance of teamwork and clear communication in large community events.
LO 6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The activity addressed global issues such as social inequality and environmental sustainability. By engaging children from underserved backgrounds and teaching them about sustainability, the experience contributed to awareness, education, and inclusive community development.
LO 7 Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical responsibility was central to this experience. I ensured fairness in the game, treated all children with respect, and handled rewards honestly. Teaching sustainability also reinforced ethical responsibility toward the environment and society.
