I participated in a Christmas Carnival at a government school as part of my CAS Service experience. The main purpose of the event was to create an enjoyable and engaging experience for the students through different games and activities. Students earned tokens by participating in the games and could exchange them for gifts. This made the event entertaining while also introducing simple ideas of earning, saving, and spending resources. I was particularly interested in this experience because I enjoy interacting with children and organizing activities.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One of the challenges I faced was managing and interacting with a large number of students while ensuring that everyone had an opportunity to participate. I had to communicate clearly and patiently, especially when explaining the rules of the games. I also had to adapt to different students and situations during the event. Through this, I developed my communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. The experience showed me that working with younger students requires flexibility and patience.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning was an important part of making the carnival successful. Before the event, I worked with the other volunteers to organize the games and understand how the token system would work. We had to consider how the activities would be conducted and how students would receive and exchange their tokens. Being involved in this preparation helped me understand the importance of planning ahead and organizing responsibilities before carrying out an activity.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The carnival required us to work closely as a team. We divided responsibilities among ourselves and supported each other while conducting the games and interacting with the students. Whenever there were several students requiring assistance at the same time, teamwork helped us manage the situation efficiently. I learned that effective collaboration involves communicating with team members, taking responsibility for assigned tasks, and helping others when needed. Working together also made the event more organized and enjoyable for the students.
Overall, the Christmas Carnival was a meaningful Service experience that allowed me to contribute to an enjoyable environment for the students while developing my own skills. It helped me become more confident in communicating with younger students, improved my ability to plan and organize activities, and showed me the importance of teamwork. Most importantly, I learned that simple and interactive activities can make learning enjoyable while creating a positive experience for others.
