Cross-Country (Activity)

Introduction

As part of my CAS Activity strand, I participated in two 3 km cross-country races and one 5 km race organized through my school. What initially seemed like a straightforward running activity turned into a challenge that tested my physical endurance, consistency and ability to stay focused when I was tired.

I chose cross-country running because I wanted to improve my fitness and push myself beyond the level of running I was already comfortable with. Unlike running on a regular track, cross-country involved uneven surfaces, changes in elevation and different types of terrain. This meant that I could not simply rely on maintaining the same pace throughout the race. I had to pay attention to my breathing, control my speed and adapt to the conditions around me.

Preparing for the races also required commitment outside the actual competition. I followed a regular training routine that included running, gradually increasing my distance and stretching. Balancing training with schoolwork was sometimes difficult, especially on busy days, but having the races as a goal helped me remain consistent.

The first two 3 km races gave me an opportunity to understand my strengths and weaknesses. I became more comfortable with controlling my pace and learned that starting too quickly could make the later stages of a race much more difficult. The experience also helped me understand how important breathing and maintaining a steady rhythm are during longer runs.

The 5 km race was the biggest challenge for me. The longer distance meant that I had to manage my energy much more carefully. There were moments when I felt physically exhausted and wanted to slow down, but I reminded myself of the preparation I had already completed. Finishing the race gave me a sense of achievement because I knew that I had pushed myself beyond my previous limits.

Learning Outcomes

Looking back at the seven CAS learning outcomes, this experience helped me develop several areas of my physical and personal development.

1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.
One of the strengths I identified through this experience was my ability to remain consistent once I committed to a goal. I was able to follow my training routine and gradually improve my endurance. At the same time, I recognized that my long-distance stamina and mental endurance still needed improvement. The 5 km race particularly showed me that I need to continue developing my ability to maintain performance when fatigue increases.

2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
Running across uneven terrain and dealing with inclines and changes in surface made the races more challenging than normal running. I developed better pacing, breathing control and the ability to adjust my running technique depending on the terrain. Continuing to run when I was physically tired also helped me become more confident in dealing with difficult situations.

4. Demonstrate commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.
Consistency was one of the most important parts of this experience. There were days when I was tired or had other responsibilities, but I continued with my training. During the races, especially the 5 km event, I experienced physical fatigue but continued until I reached the finish line. Completing all three races showed me the importance of perseverance when progress becomes difficult.

7. Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
Throughout the experience, I made sure to follow the rules of the races and compete fairly. I respected the other runners and avoided taking shortcuts or gaining an unfair advantage. I also understood the importance of warming up, staying hydrated and listening to my body to reduce the risk of injury. These experiences reinforced the importance of responsibility and fairness in sports.

Conclusion

Participating in two 3 km cross-country races and one 5 km race was more challenging than I initially expected, but it was also a valuable CAS experience. It helped me improve my endurance and physical fitness while developing discipline, perseverance and better planning.

The biggest lesson I took from the experience was that improvement does not happen immediately. It comes from consistently putting in effort, even on days when progress feels slow. The 5 km race especially showed me that mental strength is just as important as physical ability when trying to complete a difficult goal.

Overall, cross-country running helped me become more disciplined and comfortable with challenging myself. Completing all three races gave me confidence that with consistent preparation and determination, I can push beyond my previous limits and continue developing both physically and personally.
