For this Service experience, I joined Earths911, a non for profit youth drived organization for a government school adoption. I was project manager in this school adoption and I led three clubs: Math, reading, and technology. This experience aimed to provide quality education to underprivillaged students, teaching them vital skilks.
Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
In this experience, I observed that one of my major strengths was teaching complex concepts in an easy to understand manner. As I was able to break down concepts of profit, loss, drawing on an online canvas, into simpler concepts that allowed little children to grasp the concept faster. This highlights my strength in communication. However, I also recognized areas for growth, particularly in matching lesson plans to different speeds and pace of students. Not every student learns at the same pace, and the plans we made were assuming one size fits all, this was an area for growth.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Since I was leading three teams, I had to constandly resolve conflicts in the teams. This was a challenge as I had to ensure fairness while enforcing consequences when needed to maintain discipline. This challenge required me to listen to both sides of the story, reflect on what went wrong here, and resolve the conflicts ensuring that no one felt wronged.
Learning Outcome 3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
As Project Manager and club leader, I played an active role in planning the learning activities. I helped my team members in making lesson plans for the Technology, Mathematics, and Reading clubs. I also provided final comments to the lesson plan drafts and booked resources needed for the classes timely. This involved organizing the content, setting clear goals, and plan lesson plans a week before the class.
Learning Outcome 4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
This project took place over several months, requiring consistent effort and dedication. Even when students found certain topics difficult or progress seemed slow, me and my team worked harder and harder to teach them effectively. There were times when we thought are we really helping them? We overcame such moments by more hardwork and commitment to teaching them. We also went 2 saturdays each month, even in times when we had exams and assignments.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The success of the project depended heavily on teamwork. I worked closely with the three teams under me. We together curated lesson plans for the students. Each of us had our own special skills, we identified them and divided work in a way that it made completing work 10 times faster. Working collaboratively made the path to quality education easier, and it also motivated us as no one was alone in this.
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
This CAS experience directly addressed the global issue of unequal access to quality education and the sustainable development goal quality education. Through this experience we aimed at briding the education gap between underprivillaged students. The skills we taught them made them more ready for this world where knowledge is key for survival.
Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Working with younger students required sensitivity and ethical awareness. I ensured that every single student was treated with respect regardless of their academic standing. I also instructed my volunteers to maintain thier behaviour in class respectful and ethical. This was very important as we did not want to set any wrong precedents for the students, part of education is ethics and respect.
Conclusion
Overall, participating in the Earth’s 911 initiative was a meaningful CAS Service experience. Leading the Technology, Mathematics, and Reading clubs allowed me to apply my classroom knowledge to help underprevillaged students. This experience gave me an opportunity to show gratefulness for the oppotunities and previllages that I have and give back to the community.
