CAS Reflection: Children’s Carnival Stall (Creativity)

Introduction
For this creativity experience, I participated in my school’s Children’s Carnival where I held a stall for government school students. We were tasked with creating games or activities that were entertaining, colorful and engaging while also connecting to one of the UNSDGs. I was focusing on Life on Land. To address this SDG, I designed a flashcard-based game that helped children learn about animal habitats and ecosystems in a fun and creative way. I created the flashcards using online design tools such as Canva and made rules to structure the game.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this experience, I recognized that one of my areas of strengths are making creative designs on online designing tools. I really liked using canva and other editing tools to make fun flashcards for the students which made the game appealing and more interesting to play. At the same time, an area for growth I observed was maintaining a perfect ratio of entertainment with education. I could’ve ensured that the game focused more on animal life on land.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
One challenge I faced was in deciding how the game should be structured. The event organizers had kept a token system which I was facing difficulty in adding to the game structure. To overcome this I modified the game into 3 rounds, the first round gives you 10 tokens, the second gives you 20, and the third gives you 50. This gave coherency to the game required by the event organizers while ensuring that the game was still fun.

Learning Outcome 3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
I took initiative in planning the game before the event. This involved designing the flashcards, deciding rules, deciding which habitats and animals go on the flashcard, making small sentences that described the habitats, and printing these flashcards. This initiative required creative skills and digital design skills. This experience extended to a few days before the event as we had to submit stall resources to the event organizers a day before the carnival.

Learning Outcome 4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experiences
Although the carnival took place on a single day, preparing the activity required effort and dedication beforehand. The carnival spanned over 2-3 hours, with multiple batches of students coming and going. Spending 3 hours on the ground under the sun, constantly making students play the game was both taxing and energy consuming. I pushed through this moment of adversity by showing commitment and perservearence, seeing the smiles on the childrens faces kept giving me the push needed.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I organized this stall with a friend, we both worked collaboratively to ensure the success of our stall. While I handled the creative part including designing of flashcards and chartpapers, my friend worked on the service part for which she explained how different animal habitats function. Together we were able to educate many students about life on land.

Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
My stall focused on the Sustainable Development Goal Life on Land, which highlights how important preservation of animals and natural habitats is. Through the flashcard game, we conveyed how nature and animals are a part of this earth and how living in shared spaces require respect. This activity helped spread awareness about environmental conservation in a fun and creative way.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
When designing the activity, I considered how to educate children about the ecosystem and biodiversity in a responsible and ethical way. I ensured that the game reinforced protection and appreciation of wildlife rather than fear or alienating them. It was important that the activity created respect for nature and taught children that they are a part of this earth.

Conclusion
Overall this experience was one of the most wholesome cas experiences ive completed. It allowed me to combine creativity and environmental education to serve the common purpose of adressing the UNSDG life on land. This experience strengthened my communication and digital design skills the most while revealing areas of growth such as maintaining a balance between two equally important factors.
