My experience with Enrichmnt, a student-led service initiative, involved tutoring students at Rundh Magdalla Prathmic School on Saturdays. I worked with school students to support their learning and help them better understand topics they found difficult. Teaching students with different levels of understanding required me to be patient, adaptable, and willing to explain concepts in different ways. Through this experience, I was able to contribute to my local community while developing my communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Tutoring helped me recognise that one of my strengths is my ability to explain concepts in a simple and understandable way. However, I also realised that not every student learns at the same pace or through the same method. I therefore worked on becoming more patient and adaptable, changing my explanations and approach depending on the individual student. This helped me become more aware of how I communicate and where I can improve as a teacher.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Teaching students was different from simply understanding a topic myself. I had to make sure that I could communicate concepts in a way that was appropriate for the students’ level of understanding. When a student struggled with a concept, I had to find alternative ways of explaining it rather than simply repeating the same explanation. This challenged me to develop my teaching, communication, patience, and problem-solving skills.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
As Enrichmnt sessions took place on Saturdays, participating consistently required me to dedicate time outside my regular school schedule. I remained committed to attending the sessions and supporting the students throughout the experience. Even when lessons were challenging or students needed repeated explanations, I continued working with them patiently. This experience showed me the importance of consistency when making a meaningful contribution through service.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
The tutoring sessions involved working alongside other Enrichmnt student volunteers as well as interacting directly with the school students. We had to communicate with one another, divide responsibilities, and support each other when students needed additional help. Working collaboratively made it easier to manage the sessions and provide students with more individual attention. I learned that effective teamwork can make a service experience more organised and beneficial for everyone involved.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
Education and access to quality learning opportunities are significant global issues, particularly for students who may have fewer educational resources or opportunities outside school. My involvement with Enrichmnt allowed me to contribute on a local level to SDG 4: Quality Education by providing students with additional academic support. Although my contribution was small, the experience helped me understand how individual efforts can contribute towards improving educational opportunities within a community.
Overall, Enrichmnt helped me develop greater patience, adaptability, and confidence in teaching others. More importantly, it showed me that effective service is not simply about providing help, but about understanding the needs of the people being helped and consistently adapting my approach to support them.
