Farewell: A Dance to Remember

Being the dance choreographer and performer for the Grade 12 Farewell was one of the most rewarding experiences of my IBDP journey. Unlike many leadership roles that focus on logistics or management, this experience allowed me to contribute creatively and meaningfully through dance. The farewell represented a once-in-a-lifetime milestone for the graduating class, and being part of it through performance allowed me to help make the event memorable and joyful.

Learning Outcome 1 – Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
One of my strongest skills in this experience was creative expression through dance. I took responsibility for choreographing performances, ensuring that the steps were well-coordinated and expressive. I also performed in front of the audience, which helped me gain confidence and refine my ability to convey emotions through movement. At the same time, I recognized areas for personal growth. Coordinating rehearsals, guiding fellow performers, and balancing choreography with my own practice required patience and time management. This taught me how to support others while maintaining the quality of my own performance.

Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Choreographing and performing at such a large-scale event came with challenges. Adapting the choreography to the stage space, adjusting steps for different performers, and synchronizing group movements required quick problem-solving. I learned to remain calm under pressure, make adjustments in real-time, and help the team deliver a seamless performance despite time constraints. These challenges strengthened my adaptability, resilience, and confidence in performing in front of an audience—skills that extend beyond dance and into other areas of life.

Learning Outcome 3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
This experience allowed me to initiate and plan the dance performances from scratch. I conceptualized the choreography, practiced routines, and guided other performers to ensure cohesion and energy in every segment. Planning included selecting music, designing formations, and timing the performance to fit the overall program.

Through this, I learned how creative planning and thoughtful execution are essential to bringing an idea to life, and how collaboration enhances the overall outcome.

Learning Outcome 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience
Choreographing and rehearsing for the farewell required sustained commitment over several weeks. I dedicated time after school and during free periods to refine the dance, rehearse with other performers, and ensure the performance was polished. Even when tired or facing schedule conflicts, I remained committed to maintaining the quality and energy of the performance.

Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Dance is inherently collaborative, and this experience highlighted the importance of teamwork. I worked closely with fellow performers to ensure everyone understood the choreography and felt confident in their roles. Coordinating movements, providing constructive feedback, and encouraging peers allowed me to foster a supportive environment where everyone could perform at their best.

Learning Outcome 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical considerations were integral to my role as a choreographer. I ensured inclusivity in the performance, giving every participant a chance to contribute meaningfully. I respected the abilities and comfort levels of all performers, adapting choreography where necessary to ensure fairness and enjoyment.

Conclusion
Being the dance choreographer and performer for the Grade 12 Farewell was a defining CAS experience. It strengthened my creativity, confidence, collaboration, and resilience while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to a milestone event. Through this experience, I learned that impactful contributions can come in many forms—not just through leadership or logistics, but also through passion, creativity, and dedication. Participating in this farewell allowed me to express myself, support others, and celebrate our shared journey in a way that I will always cherish.
