Garba Fest 2025

I participated in my school’s Garba Fest to engage with a cultural celebration that is an important part of Gujarati tradition. Although Garba is not originally part of my cultural identity, I’ve always been curious about the meaning, energy, and connection it creates within a community. My goals were to learn the dance authentically, stay committed throughout the event, and challenge the discomfort I often feel in crowded social settings. I also wanted to build my stamina, step out of my comfort zone, and explore how participating in a cultural activity could help me grow personally, socially, and emotionally.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

The biggest challenge during Garba was balancing the fast physical pace with the emotional discomfort of being in a large crowd and participating in a cultural space that wasn’t originally mine. I worried about making mistakes or standing out, which created a mental block before the physical exhaustion even began. As I watched experienced dancers and matched the rhythm, I allowed myself to be open-minded, letting curiosity replace hesitation. This helped me adapt more confidently and become more of a risk-taker, pushing myself to stay engaged even when I felt unsure. I developed cultural adaptability, rhythm, and endurance, realizing that meaningful growth happens when I allow myself to enter unfamiliar experiences without fear.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in the experience

Staying committed wasn’t just about dancing for a long time; it was about staying mentally present even when the environment felt overwhelming. As an introvert, the noise and energy were intense, and there were moments when I felt like stepping away. But each time, I reminded myself that I joined this event to grow instead of retreat. This required quiet courage, and continuing despite discomfort helped me become more reflective about how I respond to challenging situations. By the end, the sense of perseverance I developed made me feel proud. I realized that commitment doesn’t always look dramatic, it’s often the small decision to stay engaged rather than withdraw.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Garba showed me that collaboration can be completely non-verbal yet deeply meaningful. The dance depends on shared rhythm, awareness of others, and adjusting your movements to the group. Even though I’m usually slow to open up socially, the circle created a sense of unity that made me feel included. I learned to be a more effective communicator, not through words but through pacing, observation, and harmony with the group. This strengthened my open-mindedness, because it showed me that belonging isn’t limited to sharing the same background, belonging is created through mutual participation and respect. The collaboration made the experience welcoming and helped me feel connected in a new way.

This experience helped me become more open-minded, reflective, and courageous. Participating in a cultural tradition outside my own background strengthened my communication skills and expanded my sense of identity. The highlight was realizing how much growth can come from moments of discomfort. If I repeated this experience, I’d learn more advanced steps, but I would keep the same willingness to stay present. Garba taught me that confidence and connection come from engaging fully, and I want to continue participating in cultural events that bring people together.
