Garba Fest (Activity)

Garba Fest CAS Reflection

Participating in the Garba Fest was an exciting opportunity to celebrate culture while developing organizational, creative, and collaborative skills. Being part of the organizing committee allowed me to contribute to planning and managing one of the most awaited cultural events in our school community. From decorating the venue and arranging logistics to coordinating performances and ensuring everything ran smoothly, the entire experience was energetic and rewarding. It gave me a deeper appreciation for teamwork, event planning, and the cultural significance of Garba as a traditional dance that brings people together. Through this CAS experience, I was able to engage with multiple learning outcomes, as explained below.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Through this experience, I realized my strengths in creativity, communication, and coordination. I was able to manage my assigned responsibilities efficiently, whether it was organizing the music playlist, helping with decorations, or assisting participants during the event. I discovered that I am good at staying calm under pressure and solving last-minute problems quickly. However, I also noticed areas for growth, such as managing time better when balancing event work with academics and being more assertive in delegating tasks. Recognizing these helped me improve both my planning and leadership abilities.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Organizing a large-scale cultural event like Garba Fest came with several challenges. Coordinating among different groups, managing the crowd, and ensuring smooth transitions between performances required flexibility and teamwork. Technical issues like sound adjustments and last-minute costume changes also tested our ability to stay composed. Through these challenges, I developed skills in time management, problem-solving, and quick decision-making. I also learned how to communicate effectively with diverse groups and adapt to changes calmly and efficiently.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
As part of the planning team, I was actively involved from the very beginning. We brainstormed themes, set up task lists, delegated roles, and designed a timeline for execution. I took initiative in coordinating the decoration team and worked closely with others to bring creative ideas to life. We made multiple revisions to our plans based on feedback and resource availability, ensuring the final event was organized and lively. This process gave me a better understanding of structured event planning, collaboration, and adaptability.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Preparing for Garba Fest required consistent commitment over several weeks of planning and rehearsals. I attended all meetings, worked after school hours, and helped with last-minute decorations even on the event day. There were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, especially while managing academics, but I stayed dedicated and motivated. Seeing the final event come together successfully was incredibly satisfying and made all the effort worthwhile. It reminded me that perseverance always leads to rewarding outcomes.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
This experience heavily relied on teamwork. I worked with peers who managed different areas like music, food, decorations, and dance performances. Collaborating effectively meant sharing ideas, listening to others, and supporting one another through challenges. The teamwork not only made the process smoother but also more enjoyable. It strengthened my ability to work in a group, respect different perspectives, and take initiative when needed.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Garba Fest, while being a local tradition, reflects the larger global importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting inclusivity. Through this event, I learned how festivals can bridge cultural gaps and create a sense of unity and shared identity. It reminded me that celebrating culture fosters understanding, diversity, and belonging — values that are important globally. By participating and helping organize the event, I contributed to keeping this traditional art form alive in a modern school setting.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethical considerations were a key part of this experience. I ensured fairness while assigning tasks, respected everyone’s creative input, and promoted inclusivity throughout the planning. We made sure the event environment was welcoming, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. I also learned the importance of maintaining respect for cultural traditions while balancing creativity and modern expression. Upholding these values helped us host an event that was both ethical and meaningful.

Final Reflection
Overall, the Garba Fest was a lively, enriching, and memorable CAS experience. It helped me grow as a planner, communicator, and collaborator while allowing me to celebrate and share my cultural roots. I learned to handle challenges with patience, work efficiently with others, and take pride in contributing to a larger community event. The joy and unity during the festival made every bit of effort worth it, and it taught me the importance of teamwork, cultural appreciation, and persistence in achieving success.
