Old Age Home Visit (Service)

Visiting an old age home gave me an opportunity to interact with elderly residents and gain a better understanding of their experiences and perspectives. Spending time with the residents helped me recognise the importance of companionship, respectful communication, and social inclusion. The visit also encouraged me to reflect on the needs of older members of society and the value of treating them with dignity and consideration. Through this experience, I developed a greater appreciation for the role that simple interactions can play in building connections between people from different generations.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

The visit helped me recognise the importance of listening, patience, and empathy when interacting with people whose experiences differed from my own. I became more aware of how meaningful conversations require attention and a willingness to understand another person’s perspective. I also recognised that I could continue developing my ability to initiate conversations and build connections with people from different age groups. Reflecting on the visit helped me understand how these interpersonal skills could be applied in future interactions.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Taking part in the visit required me to give my time and attention to interacting with the residents. I understood that meaningful engagement involved being present, listening carefully, and treating each person with consideration. The experience encouraged me to recognise that supporting others does not always require a large or complicated action; it can also involve giving people time and showing genuine interest in their experiences. It reinforced the importance of being responsible and consistent when participating in service activities.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The visit increased my awareness of the importance of social inclusion, ageing with dignity, and the wellbeing of older people. It encouraged me to reflect on how elderly individuals may experience social isolation and why companionship and opportunities for meaningful interaction matter. This connected to the broader aim of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), which includes supporting people’s wellbeing, and Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), which promotes inclusion across society. The experience helped me appreciate the importance of ensuring that older people are treated with respect and remain valued members of their communities.

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Interacting with the residents reminded me of the importance of respecting people’s dignity, privacy, and individual experiences. I understood that everyone has a different background and personal story, and that conversations should be approached with sensitivity rather than assumptions. Being considerate in the way I communicated helped me reflect on how my actions could affect others. This experience reinforced the importance of empathy, respect, and treating every individual with kindness and fairness.
