From 3rd November to 24th November, I undertook a creativity-based CAS experience by completing an online course in Biological Sciences on Alison. This experience allowed me to explore key biological concepts in greater depth and expand my understanding of a subject that I am genuinely interested in, particularly areas such as genetics and microbiology.

I have always been curious about how living systems function, which motivated me to select this course as my CAS experience. My purpose was to deepen my knowledge, develop new academic skills, and go beyond the limitations of classroom learning. Through this course, I engaged with new content, scientific explanations, and real-world applications of biology, which helped me build a stronger conceptual foundation.

This experience strongly reflected LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. I realised that one of my strengths is my curiosity and ability to grasp theoretical concepts. However, I also identified areas where I needed improvement, such as applying knowledge to real-life contexts and understanding more complex biological processes. By completing the course, I actively worked on these areas and improved my analytical thinking and independent learning skills.

Additionally, the course connected with LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance. Biological sciences are directly linked to global challenges such as healthcare, disease prevention, and environmental sustainability. Through the course, I gained a better understanding of how biological knowledge contributes to solving issues like pandemics, food security, and ecosystem conservation. This helped me appreciate the relevance of biology in addressing real-world problems.

The experience also demonstrated LO7: Recognising and considering the ethics of choices and actions. Many topics within biological sciences, such as genetic research, medical advancements, and biotechnology, involve ethical considerations. Learning about these areas made me reflect on the importance of responsible scientific practices and how decisions in science can impact society and the environment. It highlighted the need to balance innovation with ethical responsibility.

This CAS experience aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of Quality Education and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. By engaging in self-directed learning, I contributed to my own educational growth while understanding how scientific knowledge drives innovation and development. It emphasised the importance of continuous learning in building a more informed and progressive society.

Furthermore, I demonstrated the IB learner profile attribute of being Knowledgeable. Through this course, I expanded my understanding of biological sciences beyond the classroom and developed a deeper appreciation for the subject. I not only gained new knowledge but also learned how to approach scientific concepts with curiosity and critical thinking.

Overall, this online course was a valuable CAS creativity experience that enhanced my academic growth and global awareness. It reinforced my interest in biological sciences and encouraged me to continue exploring the subject further, while also understanding its broader impact on society and the world.
