Rural Immersion: Ambapani

My experience in the rural immersion trip to Ambapani included several activities. Interacting with the locals and the villagers to understand the lifestyle in rural areas, living around the forest was very engaging and fun. We did several activities such as trekking, plastic collection, farming, adventure activities, lippan art, bird watching and calling, ashramshala visit, warli art and bamboo basket making. The trip helped me develop all the learner profile attributes in different ways and helping me grow and understand a whole new perspective to life. This CAS experience allowed me to cater to all of the CAS LOs, they are described in detail below.

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
The trip allowed me to grow as a person. It showed me several strengths of mine such as being open-minded and adapting to the environment. It especially showed my collaboration skills which were evident in several activities like plastic collection and farming. While several activities requiring skilled techniques were lacking, the trip allowed me to develop in these areas of growth.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Throughout the experience several challenges were taken. Trekking and adventure activities showed challenges that were undertaken as well as lippan art due to the use of cow dung and mud to create the materials for the art. Skills for the artforms lippan art and warli art were developed by the guidance of experts. I also learn how to make bamboo basket making which taught me the skill of being patient. The whole trip overall allowed me to develop the 5 ATL skills through each of the different activities done throughout the rural immersion.

LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
The CAS experience although been planned also required planning activities especially when it came to initiating and planning activities to be done when visiting the ashramshala. My friends and I planned to teach frisbee to the children there, which required planning. Also, warli art and doing it efficiently and strategically showed planning.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The CAS experience being a 6 day trip to Dang required commitment and perseverance due to the place and being away from home. Actively participating in the activities and engaging with the locals showed these attitudes. In addition to this, waking up early every morning and performing the activities also showed commitment and perseverance required in the rural immersion trip.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
The CAS experience involved a lot of group activities. Firstly, the plastic collection involved groups of students collecting the waste. In groups, we divided roles and areas which allowed us to collect more waste. In addition to this, other activities like the ashramshala visit and farming also showed how working collaboratively benefitted us. The farming activities involved moving the hay stacks from one place to another in the farm. Dividing the roles of organizing and passing the stack from one person to another helped to efficiently complete the task. Thus social skills used in the activities helped show the benefits of working collaboratively.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The rural immersion trip involved covering several sustainability aspects. Hunger, poverty, pollution, deforestation and several issues were catered to. The visit to the ashramshala, plastic collection and visit to the villagers allowed to cater to such global issues. Further the environment and social factors were also catered to by learning about lippan and warli art which are used to create houses and decorate it to show traditional folk stories.

LO 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
The trip allowed to show ethical responsibility and privilege especially through the visit to the orphanage. Understanding our behaviour and way of life explores the ethics of choices and actions specifically when it comes to consumption choices and behaviour patterns. Thus, the rural vs urban life explored demonstrated the ethics of choices and actions.

Overall, the rural immersion trip was very fun and engaging. I am grateful for this opportunity to learn how the rurals live and how villagers survive in the forest. The trip all in all was very interactive and informative.
