Rural immersion

Type of CAS: Service, Creativity and Activity
Location: Rural Village Immersion Program

For my CAS experience, I participated in a rural immersion program where I visited a village to understand the lifestyle, challenges, and strengths of rural communities. During the immersion, I interacted with local families, observed agricultural practices, participated in community activities, and learned about the social and economic realities of rural life. This experience allowed me to step outside my urban environment and gain a deeper appreciation of different living conditions, values, and perspectives.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through rural immersion, I recognized my strength in adaptability. Initially, adjusting to limited resources, simpler living conditions, and a different daily routine was challenging. However, I remained open-minded and willing to learn. At the same time, I realized I need to improve my ability to initiate conversations in unfamiliar environments, as I was initially hesitant to approach villagers. This experience helped me grow more confident and culturally sensitive.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One major challenge was adapting to a completely different lifestyle, including limited technology, basic facilities, and physically demanding tasks. Participating in agricultural activities and household chores required patience and effort. Through this, I developed practical skills, improved my communication abilities, and learned to appreciate manual labor. These challenges strengthened my resilience and broadened my perspective on daily life beyond urban convenience.

LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The immersion program required structured preparation. We researched the village’s background, planned activities to engage with the community, and prepared materials for interactive sessions. I contributed ideas during planning discussions, especially regarding how we could respectfully interact with villagers and make the experience mutually beneficial. This taught me that meaningful service requires thoughtful preparation and cultural sensitivity.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Adjusting to rural conditions was not always comfortable. Long days, physical work, and unfamiliar routines required sustained commitment. Despite initial discomfort, I remained fully engaged throughout the immersion, actively participating in discussions and activities. My perseverance ensured that I gained maximum understanding from the experience rather than withdrawing into my comfort zone.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

The immersion experience was highly collaborative. I worked with classmates to complete group tasks and interact respectfully with villagers. Effective teamwork was essential in organizing activities and ensuring smooth communication. I learned that collaboration enhances problem-solving and allows diverse perspectives to contribute to a shared objective.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Rural immersion exposed me to issues such as unequal access to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. These are not isolated local problems but reflect broader global challenges related to development and social equity. Observing these realities firsthand helped me understand the importance of sustainable development and inclusive growth in reducing inequality worldwide.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

The experience prompted reflection on privilege, responsibility, and ethical decision-making. Witnessing the disparities between rural and urban lifestyles made me more conscious of resource consumption and social inequality. I reflected on how my own choices—such as excessive use of resources—contrast with the limited access available in rural areas. This strengthened my sense of ethical responsibility to contribute positively to society and advocate for equitable development.
