CAS Blog: Organising a Grade 11–12 Night-Out

For my CAS project, I organised a night-out event for Grade 11 and 12 students with the aim of creating a safe, enjoyable, and memorable social experience outside the academic environment. I noticed that students were often stressed due to academic pressure, and I wanted to provide an opportunity for everyone to relax and strengthen peer connections in a positive setting.

The process began with proposing the idea to the school administration and gaining approval. I had to present a clear plan outlining the purpose of the event, safety measures, supervision requirements, estimated number of attendees, and logistical arrangements. This helped me understand the importance of structured planning and accountability.

Once approved, I organised a small team of volunteers to help with coordination. Responsibilities were divided — some focused on venue setup, others on managing attendance lists, communication, and ensuring rules were followed. I also ensured that school policies were respected and that proper supervision was arranged throughout the event.

One of the biggest challenges was managing time and expectations. Balancing academic responsibilities with event planning required strong time management. There were also moments of uncertainty, such as confirming participation numbers and handling last-minute changes. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I learned to stay calm, think practically, and adapt quickly.

On the day of the event, I ensured everything ran smoothly — from welcoming students to monitoring safety and making sure everyone felt included. Seeing students enjoy themselves and interact positively was incredibly rewarding. It made me realise that leadership is not just about organising tasks but about creating an environment where others feel comfortable and valued.

🔎 Connection to CAS Learning Outcomes

LO1: Identify strengths and develop areas for growth

Through this project, I recognised my strengths in leadership, communication, and decision-making. However, I also realised that I need to improve my delegation skills and avoid taking on too much responsibility alone.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken

Organising a large group event was outside my comfort zone. Managing approvals, logistics, and peer coordination challenged me to step into a leadership role confidently.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I independently initiated the idea, created a proposal, organised logistics, formed a team, and ensured safety guidelines were met. This demonstrated structured planning and organisation.

LO4: Show commitment and perseverance

Despite academic workload and unexpected changes, I remained committed to making the event successful. I consistently followed up on tasks and ensured nothing was overlooked.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and recognize benefits of working collaboratively

Working with volunteers and teachers taught me the importance of teamwork. I learned to trust others, value their input, and understand that collaboration strengthens outcomes.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This experience promoted student well-being and mental health by encouraging balanced lifestyles and healthy social interaction — issues relevant to students worldwide.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout the process, I prioritised safety, inclusivity, and responsibility. I ensured school policies were respected and made ethical decisions to protect the well-being of all participants.
