Spark Tank (Creativity)

CAS Blog: Spark Tank – EqoBriq (For-Profit Social Enterprise)

Participating in Spark Tank was one of the most impactful CAS experiences for me, especially as my team and I emerged as winners. Our business idea, EqoBriq, focused on producing biomass briquettes as a sustainable alternative to coal, while also exploring their use in creating biodegradable furniture. This combination of environmental sustainability and innovation allowed us to approach a global issue from multiple angles, making the experience both intellectually engaging and meaningful.

Reflection on Personal Strengths and Areas for Growth (LO 1)
As the team leader, I was responsible for guiding the direction of our idea, conducting research, and creating the final presentation. I realized that one of my key strengths is my ability to organize ideas and translate them into a structured and compelling format. However, I also identified an area for growth in managing pressure, especially when leading a team and ensuring that everyone stays aligned. This experience showed me that leadership is not just about directing others, but also about maintaining clarity and confidence under pressure.

Challenges Faced and Skills Developed (LO 2)
One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring that our idea was not only innovative but also feasible. We had to carefully research biomass briquettes, understand their production process, and justify how they could realistically replace coal while also being adapted into furniture. Balancing creativity with practicality was difficult, but it helped me develop critical thinking, research, and analytical skills. Additionally, presenting the idea in a clear and convincing manner required strong communication and adaptability.

Demonstrating Commitment and Perseverance (LO 4)
The journey to the final presentation required consistent effort and dedication. As a team leader, I had to ensure that progress was being made and that we were continuously improving our idea. There were moments when certain aspects of our concept needed to be reworked, but we stayed committed and kept refining our approach. This perseverance played a key role in our success and reinforced the importance of sustained effort.

Working Collaboratively (LO 5)
Although I was the team leader, the success of EqoBriq was a result of effective collaboration. Each team member contributed ideas and perspectives that helped strengthen our concept. I had to ensure that everyone’s input was valued while also guiding the team towards a clear final direction. This experience taught me how to balance leadership with teamwork, and how collaboration can enhance both creativity and efficiency.

Engagement with Global Issues (LO 6)
EqoBriq directly addressed the global issue of environmental sustainability. By promoting biomass briquettes as an alternative fuel, we aimed to reduce reliance on coal and lower carbon emissions. Additionally, the idea of biodegradable furniture highlighted the importance of reducing waste and promoting sustainable consumption. This made me more aware of how innovative business solutions can contribute to solving global environmental challenges.

Considering Ethics in Actions and Decisions (LO 7)
As a for-profit social enterprise, we had to carefully consider the balance between profitability and environmental responsibility. It was important that our idea remained accessible and genuinely beneficial to society, rather than focusing solely on profit. This required us to think ethically about pricing, production, and long-term impact, reinforcing the importance of responsible decision-making in business.

Overall, Spark Tank was a highly rewarding CAS experience that allowed me to take on a leadership role while applying creativity, research, and critical thinking. Winning the competition was a significant achievement, but more importantly, it showed me how a well-developed idea, supported by teamwork and feasibility, can create meaningful impact.
