BASKET 2: Farewell (6/2/26)

The Senior Farewell was my main CAS project and one of the most meaningful experiences of my IB journey so far. As one of the six core committee members, I played a central role in organizing the event, with my primary responsibility being Dance In-Charge. Since dance is my passion, I took ownership of conceptualizing, organizing, and executing all dance performances for the farewell. This project combined Creativity (choreography and performance design), Activity (physical rehearsals and execution), and Service (organizing an event to honor our seniors). My goal was to ensure that the farewell was memorable, emotionally meaningful, and professionally executed.

Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through this project, I recognized that leadership in creative spaces is one of my strongest abilities. I was confident in choreographing, teaching steps, managing rehearsals, and maintaining performance quality. I also realized that I naturally take responsibility when something matters to me. However, I identified that I sometimes struggle with delegating tasks because I want everything to be perfect. This occasionally increased my workload and stress. I learned that trusting others and distributing responsibility more effectively would have reduced pressure and improved efficiency. This awareness has helped me grow not only as a dancer but also as a leader.

Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

One of the biggest challenges was balancing academics with intense rehearsal schedules and planning meetings. Managing multiple dance groups, coordinating timings, and handling last-minute changes required adaptability and emotional control. Unlike previous dance performances, this time I was responsible not just for performing, but for ensuring everyone else performed confidently. I developed skills in time management, conflict resolution, and contingency planning. Facing these challenges made me feel more capable and resilient. Undertaking new challenges is important because it pushes personal boundaries and reveals leadership potential.

Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

As part of the core committee, planning was constant. Although responsibilities were divided among six members, coordination was essential. For the dance segment, I had to initiate song selection, choreography concepts, rehearsal schedules, and final stage positioning. Planning was more difficult than initiating because it required attention to detail and long-term organization. I learned how to break down large goals into structured timelines and anticipate possible setbacks. This experience strengthened my event management skills and made me more confident in planning future large-scale initiatives.

Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

This project demanded long hours of rehearsal, repeated practice sessions, and continuous coordination. There were moments of exhaustion and stress, especially close to the event date. However, my commitment to delivering a meaningful farewell kept me motivated. Perseverance was required when rehearsals were not perfect or when team members felt discouraged. Staying patient and consistent ensured that the final performances were polished and impactful. This experience reinforced that commitment is the foundation of any successful project.

Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working alongside five other core committee members required constant communication and compromise. Each person had different ideas, working styles, and strengths. As Dance In-Charge, I had to collaborate with hosts, technical teams, and performers to ensure smooth transitions. There were moments of disagreement, but we resolved them through discussion and shared goals. This project showed me that collaboration strengthens outcomes and reduces individual burden. Leadership within a team requires listening just as much as directing.

Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Organizing the farewell required ethical consideration in ensuring inclusivity, fairness, and respect. It was important that all seniors felt represented and appreciated, and that no group was excluded from performances or recognition. As Dance In-Charge, I had to ensure equal opportunities for participation and avoid favoritism. My decisions directly impacted others’ experiences. This made me more conscious of how leadership roles require fairness and sensitivity. Before this project, I mainly focused on performance quality; however, I learned that ethical responsibility in leadership is just as important as creativity.

Conclusion

The Senior Farewell CAS Project was not just an event—it was a journey of leadership, creativity, service, and personal growth. As a core committee member and Dance In-Charge, I learned how to balance passion with responsibility, perfection with teamwork, and creativity with ethics. This project pushed me beyond my comfort zone and strengthened my confidence as a leader and organizer. More than anything, it showed me that when dedication, collaboration, and vision come together, meaningful impact is created.
