Type of CAS: Service
Location: Community Park and Surrounding Neighborhood

For my CAS service experience, I participated in a community clean-up drive aimed at reducing litter and promoting environmental awareness. This initiative involved collecting plastic waste, segregating recyclable materials, and spreading awareness among local residents about maintaining cleanliness in public spaces. The activity was both physically engaging and socially meaningful, as it allowed me to contribute directly to improving my community’s environment. Beyond simply picking up waste, the experience helped me understand the broader impact of individual actions on environmental sustainability.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Through this clean-up drive, I recognized my strength in leadership and organization. I was proactive in coordinating small groups and ensuring tasks were distributed efficiently. However, I also realized that I sometimes hesitate to delegate responsibilities fully, preferring to complete tasks myself to ensure quality. This reflection helped me understand the importance of trusting others and improving my collaborative leadership skills. The experience allowed me to grow more confident in guiding peers while remaining open to feedback.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One major challenge was managing waste segregation effectively. Initially, I lacked knowledge about distinguishing between recyclable, biodegradable, and non-recyclable materials. Through guidance and practical involvement, I developed a clearer understanding of proper waste management practices. Additionally, engaging with community members to encourage participation required me to step out of my comfort zone and improve my communication skills. These challenges helped me build environmental awareness and interpersonal confidence.

LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The clean-up drive required structured planning. We selected a location with significant litter accumulation, organized necessary materials such as gloves and garbage bags, and established safety guidelines. I contributed to planning the timeline and dividing responsibilities among participants. Being involved in the preparation stage taught me how important organization and foresight are in executing a successful service initiative. It demonstrated that effective service requires planning, not just participation.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

The clean-up process was physically demanding and time-consuming, especially under the sun. There were moments when fatigue set in, but I remained committed to completing the assigned areas thoroughly. Instead of rushing, I focused on maintaining consistency and ensuring the space was genuinely cleaner by the end of the drive. This perseverance reinforced the value of dedication and responsibility when contributing to community welfare.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

The clean-up drive was a team effort. Working alongside peers required clear communication, cooperation, and mutual support. We divided tasks efficiently and helped one another when areas became difficult to manage. This collaborative environment highlighted how collective effort produces far greater impact than individual action. I learned to appreciate different perspectives and strengths within a group, which enhanced both efficiency and morale.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Environmental pollution and waste management are global issues that affect ecosystems, public health, and climate change. Participating in this clean-up drive helped me understand how local actions connect to larger environmental challenges. By addressing litter in our community, we contributed in a small but meaningful way to sustainability efforts. This experience deepened my awareness of environmental responsibility and reinforced the importance of sustainable habits in daily life.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

During the activity, I reflected on the ethical responsibility individuals hold toward shared spaces and future generations. Improper waste disposal reflects a lack of accountability toward the environment and community. By participating in the clean-up drive, I considered how my own consumption habits contribute to waste production. This led me to evaluate my personal choices, such as reducing single-use plastics and recycling more consistently. The experience strengthened my sense of ethical responsibility toward environmental stewardship.
