As part of my CAS Activity component, I participated in three cross country running events organized by my school. Two of the runs were 3 kilometers each, and one was a 5 kilometer run. Cross country running requires endurance, determination, and mental strength. Taking part in these runs allowed me to challenge myself physically while also developing discipline and resilience. This experience helped me work toward several CAS Learning Outcomes while improving my stamina, focus, and overall fitness.
LO1 – Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Through participating in the cross country runs, I recognized several of my strengths. I realized that I have strong determination and the ability to push myself physically even when I start feeling tired. During each race, I stayed focused on completing the distance and maintaining a steady pace. I also noticed that I am motivated in competitive environments, which helped me stay determined throughout the runs.
At the same time, I identified areas where I need improvement. Long-distance running requires strong stamina and proper pacing. During the first 3 km run, I started too fast and became tired earlier than expected. This helped me realize that I need to improve my pacing strategy and build better endurance. Recognizing these areas of growth helped me understand how I can improve my performance in future physical activities.
LO2 – Undertake Challenges and Develop New Skills
Cross country running presented several challenges because it requires both physical and mental endurance. Running long distances without stopping can be difficult, especially when fatigue begins to set in. The 5 km run was particularly challenging because it required greater stamina and mental focus compared to the shorter races.
Through these challenges, I developed important skills such as pacing myself, controlling my breathing, and maintaining focus during long distances. I learned how to distribute my energy throughout the run rather than exhausting myself at the start. This experience helped me build resilience and confidence in handling physically demanding activities.
LO4 – Show Perseverance and Commitment
Cross country running requires perseverance because runners must continue even when they feel tired or uncomfortable. During each run, there were moments when I felt exhausted and wanted to slow down or stop. However, I stayed committed to finishing the race and pushed myself to keep going.
Completing all three runs, especially the longer 5 km distance, showed my dedication and determination. The sense of achievement after finishing each race made the effort worthwhile. This experience taught me that perseverance and commitment are essential qualities when facing challenges.
LO5 – Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively
Even though cross country running is an individual sport, teamwork and encouragement from others play an important role. Running alongside my classmates created a motivating environment where we encouraged each other to keep going. Seeing my peers continue running helped me stay motivated and maintain my effort.
Supporting and motivating one another during the runs strengthened the sense of teamwork within the group. This experience showed me that even in individual activities, collaboration and encouragement can make challenges easier and more enjoyable to overcome.
Participating in the three cross country runs was a valuable CAS Activity experience. Completing two 3 km runs and one 5 km run challenged me physically and mentally while helping me develop perseverance, discipline, and resilience. Through this experience, I was able to reflect on my strengths, improve my endurance, and better understand the importance of commitment and personal goal setting in physical activities.
