As part of my CAS service, I volunteered at an old age home with my classmates. Our goal was to spend quality time with the residents, talk to them, and make them feel valued through our presence and conversations. Although the visit lasted only a few hours, it had a lasting impact on me. Listening to the residents share stories about their lives made me realise how important companionship is, especially for elderly people who may not receive regular visits from their families.
LO1 Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
This experience helped me recognise that I am patient, understanding, and able to communicate respectfully with people of different ages. I enjoyed listening to the residents and making them feel heard. At the same time, I realised that I need to become more confident when starting conversations with people I have never met before, especially those who are quiet or hesitant to speak.
LO2 Undertake Challenges and Develop New Skills
Talking to elderly residents was a new experience for me. Every person had a different personality, and I had to adjust the way I communicated with each of them. Some enjoyed long conversations, while others needed more encouragement to participate. This helped me improve my communication, listening, and interpersonal skills while also teaching me the importance of empathy and patience.
LO4 Show Commitment and Perseverance
I remained actively involved throughout the visit and made an effort to ensure that every resident I spoke with felt respected and included. Even when conversations slowed down or became emotional, I stayed engaged and continued to offer my attention and support. This experience showed me that meaningful service requires dedication and consistency.
LO5 Demonstrate the Benefits of Working Collaboratively
The visit was organised as a team activity, and we worked together to make sure every resident had someone to talk to. We supported one another and shared responsibilities throughout the visit. This experience reinforced the importance of teamwork and showed me how working together allows a group to make a greater impact than working individually.
LO6 Engage with Issues of Global Significance
The visit made me aware of the growing issue of loneliness among elderly people. Many older adults face social isolation, which can affect their emotional well-being. I realised that even simple acts such as listening, talking, and spending time with someone can make a meaningful difference. This experience encouraged me to appreciate the importance of community involvement in supporting vulnerable groups.
LO7 Recognise and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions
This experience reminded me that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, dignity, and respect regardless of their age. I learned that true service is not about completing an activity but about making a sincere effort to understand and support others. Being honest, compassionate, and respectful in my interactions helped me understand the ethical responsibility involved in serving the community.
Overall Reflection
Visiting the old age home was one of the most meaningful CAS experiences I have participated in. It improved my communication skills, empathy, teamwork, and social awareness while teaching me the value of giving my time to others. I left the experience with a greater appreciation for the elderly and a stronger desire to continue participating in community service that creates a positive impact.
