From 17th September to 17th December, I participated in rock climbing as my CAS activity experience. This was my first time trying rock climbing, and I chose it because I wanted to explore something new and challenge myself beyond my comfort zone. What started as a completely unfamiliar activity gradually became an experience that helped me grow both physically and mentally.Rock climbing required a combination of strength, focus, and strategy. Each climb was like solving a puzzle — I had to carefully analyse the route, plan my movements, and adapt when a particular hold did not work. This process strengthened my problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as I learned to approach challenges with patience and flexibility. This experience strongly reflected LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills. As a beginner, I initially found climbing difficult and physically demanding. However, over time, I developed new skills such as balance, coordination, and proper climbing techniques. Progressing to more difficult routes showed me how consistent effort leads to improvement and growth.Additionally, I demonstrated LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth. I discovered that I am determined and willing to push through challenges, which helped me persist even when climbs became difficult. At the same time, I recognised areas for growth, such as improving my upper body strength and endurance. By continuously practicing, I worked on these areas and saw noticeable improvement in my performance.Rock climbing also contributed to the Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-being. The activity involved regular physical exercise, which improved my overall fitness, strength, and coordination. Mentally, it enhanced my focus, concentration, and ability to stay calm under pressure. It reinforced the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle for both physical and mental well-being.A key learning from this experience was perseverance. There were many moments when I failed to complete a climb and had to restart. Instead of giving up, I learned to view failure as part of the learning process. This built my resilience and taught me the value of persistence and continuous effort.Furthermore, I demonstrated the IB learner profile attribute of being a Risk-taker. Rock climbing pushed me to face my fears, try new routes, and climb higher with confidence. While doing so, I remained aware of safety measures and made calculated decisions. This balance between courage and caution helped me build confidence and trust in my abilities.Climbing with others also allowed me to develop teamwork and communication skills. Trusting my peers and supporting each other created a positive and motivating environment, making the experience even more rewarding.Overall, rock climbing was a highly enriching CAS activity that helped me grow in multiple ways. It allowed me to discover a new interest, build resilience, and develop both physical and mental strength. Most importantly, it taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone can lead to meaningful personal growth and new opportunities.
