Service: Community Service

This community service was a rewarding experience where I shared my passion for science and engaged students in a fun, educational manner. The process led to significant personal growth, making me more open-minded and caring. Teaching also fostered a deeper appreciation for my own education. All CAS Learning Outcomes were addressed through this engagement, and the details follow below.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

Although I have taught students of a similar age before, this experience presented new challenges since the learners had a different learning pace and style. Teaching science concepts in an engaging and understandable way helped me strengthen my communication and social skills. I also explored creative teaching methods to keep the students interested and motivated. One of the major challenges was explaining scientific terms in Gujarati, especially when the students already had their own vocabulary or understanding of the topic. However, with time, patience, and improved communication, I was able to overcome this difficulty and teach the concepts effectively.

LO 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

This CAS experience required consistent involvement over six weekends, and showing up regularly demonstrated my commitment and perseverance. By being present for every session and actively engaging with the students, I was able to build continuity in their learning while also forming a meaningful connection with them. My consistent participation reflects my dedication to the experience and its purpose.

LO 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working alongside several volunteers required coordination, communication, and shared responsibility. We divided tasks based on grade levels and lesson plans to ensure the sessions ran smoothly and efficiently. Through collaboration, we created a supportive teaching environment and delivered the content in a more organized and effective way. This teamwork helped achieve better outcomes than working individually.
